The novel was translated into more than twenty languages and gained world-wide acclaim. Its famous English author, Victoria Hislop, won Discovery of the Year at the Galaxy British Book Awards 2007. She continued to sing of her love for Greece on the pages of her next novels, including The Thread, Those Who Are Loved and One Night in August. For her commendable promotion of Greek history and culture, evident in the themes of her stories, Hislop was made an honorary citizen of Greece.

5. Sputnik Sweetheart

One of Haruki Murakami’s early novels explores the topics of conformity, loneliness, and same-sex love. The main part of the story takes place on an unnamed Greek island, which becomes a scene for the web of endless conversations of heroes and their riddles. The novel has become a classic of modern Japanese literature and a kind of mysterious anthem for lonely people.

Russia to Launch the First Lunar Mission in 50 Years

Russia’s new lunar mission is about to take off as the country is eagerly preparing to launch Luna-25, an automatic interplanetary station. The first launch of the last fifty years is scheduled for August 11th from the Vostochny Cosmodrome.

Goals of Russia’s Lunar Mission

The Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences has identified the main tasks of this Russian lunar mission. These include the search for water and volatile compounds and the construction of a surface map. Roscosmos says the station will use soft landing technology, collect and analyze soil, and conduct long-term scientific research.

The state corporation emphasized that the station was developed with a completely Russian element base. A significant distinction from previous stations is its soft landing in the lunar south pole region, contrasting with Soviet lunar stations. Those used to land in the equatorial zone with less complex terrain.

As Roscosmos declared, the flight will take from 4.5 to 5.5 days according to a scheduled program. During the flight, two corrections will be made. After the deceleration pulse, the spacecraft will enter a one hundred kilometer high circumpolar orbit, where it will operate from three to seven days.

Speaking about the problems of the station, Pavel Kazmerchuk, the chief designer of Russia’s lunar mission project, singled out its heavy mass. The weight of the module is about eight hundred kilometers.

This Russian Lunar Mission will be the first of the country’s planned launches. The long-term goal is to establish a Russian scientific station on the Moon.

Evacuation

The Khabarovsk region is actively preparing for Russia’s lunar mission due to the possible fall of the rocket stages. Local authorities will evacuate the inhabitants of one of the villages of this Far East region.

The estuaries of five rivers are located in the proposed fall zone.

Confrontation with the West

The European Space Agency (ESA) has said it will not cooperate with Moscow regarding the upcoming launch of Luna 25 or future missions 26 and 27.

Putin has previously said that Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight in 1961 took place under the conditions of complete Soviet Union isolation. He also noted that Russia would continue creating technologies for nuclear and space energy.

The TASS news agency said that with the current lunar mission of Russia, the country is not “just returning to the moon, but is taking a step towards staying there for a long time.”

The automatic interplanetary station Luna-25 relies on Soviet developments pertaining to the exploration of Earth’s natural satellite. Earlier, in 1976, the Luna-24 station delivered 170 grams of lunar soil to Earth.

Russian-Chinese cooperation

The launch is the first mission of Moscow’s new lunar project. It comes at a time when President Vladimir Putin is looking to step up space cooperation with China after ties with the West were severed following Russia’s Ukraine invasion.

Countries are building up partnerships not only in the space sector. In 2022, a new cross-border bridge opened between Russia and China in order to increase trade. In addition, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that China could supply Russia with weapons and uniforms for the war with Ukraine.

NATO space plans

Earlier, it became known that NASA and DARPA are collaborating on the DRACO mission, planning to launch the world’s first nuclear-powered spacecraft into orbit by 2025.

The parties are seeking to test a new rocket propulsion system that could shorten a trip to Mars by up to forty-five days at a cost of $499 million.

Old Woman Fights Off Intruder, Then Feeds Him

An 87-year-old woman from Maine, USA, courageously defended herself against a teenage assailant who broke into her home. Despite the frightening situation, Marjorie Perkins managed to fend off the intruder and, surprisingly, showed kindness by offering him food when he mentioned he was extremely hungry.

The incident occurred at 2 a.m. (local time) on July 26 when Marjorie woke up to find a young man standing beside her bed. He had already removed his shirt and pants and threatened her with a knife, saying he intended to harm her.

In response to the imminent danger, Marjorie decided to take action and defend herself. Instead of succumbing to fear, she bravely chose to fight back, asserting, ““I thought to myself, if’s he’s going to cut, then I’m going to kick.”

Surprising turn of events

In her Brunswick home, Marjorie quickly put on her shoes and bravely fought back against the intruder. As the two struggled, she used a chair to create some distance between them, trying to protect herself.

During the altercation, the intruder managed to strike her on the cheek and forehead, causing her pain and distress. However, he soon changed his approach and made his way towards the kitchen.

In a surprising turn of events, the intruder shared that he was feeling incredibly hungry. Despite the frightening situation and the harm he had caused, Marjorie’s compassionate nature led her to consider his plea for food.

How the old woman ensured her safety

After the frightening encounter, Marjorie responded to the intruder’s plea for food by offering him a box of peanut butter and honey crackers, two protein drinks, and two tangerines. While he consumed the food, Marjorie acted swiftly to ensure her safety and that of her home.

Using her rotary phone, she dialed 911 and spoke with a dispatcher, providing critical information about the intruder’s actions.

Meanwhile, the hungry intruder gathered his pants and eventually decided to leave. In his haste, he left behind a knife, shirt, shoes, and a water bottle containing alcohol, which served as important evidence for the authorities’ investigation.

Action by the authorities

Expressing her concerns about the current state of affairs, Marjorie stated, “I think our law has just folded up.” She observed that people seem to have lost their fear of consequences, leading them to act without restraint and as they please.

In response to the incident, the police swiftly took action. A news release reported that the teenager responsible for the break-in was promptly located and charged with multiple offenses, including burglary, criminal threatening, assault, and underage consumption of alcohol.

Due to his age, authorities decided not to disclose his identity. It was revealed that the young intruder was residing just a few blocks away from Marjorie’s home.

Musk to Pay Costs for Workers Getting in Trouble for Tweets

Elon Musk pledges to cover expenses for individuals who have faced unjust treatment from their employers due to their interactions with X (previously referred to as Twitter).

The wealthy entrepreneur has stated that his company will offer unrestricted financial support for legal matters despite reports of financial difficulties surrounding the platform.

The process of seeking aid or receiving compensation for those impacted remains uncertain. Nonetheless, a number of individuals have expressed their interest and responded to Musk’s statement.

On Sunday, Musk shared a post, formerly called a tweet, which was seen by over a hundred million people.

“If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill,” Musk promised. “No limit. Please let us know.”

Job losses due to following of Twitter accounts

It has been the case that some people have lost jobs due to their show of support for a certain tweet by either liking or retweeting them or even just following an account.

For instance, a U.S. video game worker named Kara Lynne was fired from Limited Run Games.

The reasoning behind this was that she followed accounts that expressed negativity towards transgender individuals and expressed enthusiasm for a Harry Potter game, according to Daily Mail.

Lynne, who faced job loss due to a complaint from trans activist Jessica Blank, was mentioned in Musk’s message. He replied to her and requested further information.

Another case involves Sasha White, a literary assistant agent residing in New York. She revealed that she was dismissed from her position at The Tobias Literary Agency for retweeting a comment concerning transgender women.

Elon Musk and his opinion of freedom of speech

Musk has consistently emphasized his support for open expression on the social media platform. He has also taken steps to reinstate accounts of individuals who were previously banned when the platform was owned by others.

For instance, in December, Musk restored the Twitter account of former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, Trump has not yet resumed using the platform.

The former President was banned from using Twitter at the beginning of 2021 due to his involvement in the January 6th assault on the U.S. Capitol. During this event, a faction of his supporters aimed to invalidate the outcomes of the 2020 election.

Over time, it will be revealed whether or not Musk will do good on his vows to pay the legal costs for workers who have been unfairly treated as a result of their usage of the X (Twitter) platform.

Barbie Movie Tops Box Office, Breaks Record for Women Directors

In a groundbreaking achievement for women directors, the movie ‘Barbie’ has soared to unprecedented success, surpassing a remarkable milestone of $1 billion in global ticket sales.

This feat was accomplished in a mere 17 days since its release, setting a new record for female directors, previously held by Patty Jenkins, renowned for her work on ‘Wonder Woman.’

People behind the success of Barbie

The credit for this phenomenal success goes to Greta Gerwig, the director and co-writer of ‘Barbie.’ This weekend alone, the movie raked in an additional $53 million from 4,178 theaters across North America and an impressive $74 million internationally, propelling its total worldwide earnings to a staggering $1.03 billion, as reported by the studio on Sunday.

Headlined and produced by the talented Margot Robbie, ‘Barbie’ has dominated the top spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks and shows no signs of slowing down.

It surpassed the $400 million mark in the United States and the $500 million mark internationally faster than any other film from the studio, even outpacing the immensely popular ‘Harry Potter’ series.

This momentous achievement not only cements ‘Barbie’ as one of the highest-grossing movies of all time but also marks a significant breakthrough for women in the film industry.

“As distribution chiefs, we’re not often rendered speechless by a film’s performance, but Barbillion has blown even our most optimistic predictions out of the water,” said Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps, who are responsible for overseeing the movie’s distribution both domestically and internationally, in a joint statement.

Modern box office records

In the history of modern box office records, only 53 movies have managed to cross the impressive $1 billion mark, without considering inflation.

Now, ‘Barbie’ stands as the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, surpassing the global earnings of ‘Wonder Woman,’ which amounted to $821.8 million.

Though ‘Barbie’ holds this groundbreaking title, there are still three movies co-directed by women that have earned more. ‘Frozen’ and ‘Frozen 2,’ both co-directed by Jennifer Lee, achieved remarkable success with earnings of $1.3 billion and $1.45 billion, respectively.

Additionally, ‘Captain Marvel,’ co-directed by Anna Boden, also outperformed ‘Barbie’ with a total of $1.1 billion in global ticket sales.

However, ‘Barbie’ managed to overtake ‘Captain Marvel’ in the United States, amassing $459.4 million compared to ‘Captain Marvel’s’ $426.8 million, thus establishing a new North American record for live-action movies directed by women.

Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros., expressed their admiration for Greta Gerwig’s directorial prowess in a statement. They praised her brilliance and dedication in creating a movie that caters to Barbie fans of all ages, which is undoubtedly reflected in the film’s phenomenal success on the big screen.

The ‘Barbenheimer’ fever

Moviegoers have been indulging in a unique movie experience by pairing a viewing of ‘Barbie’ with Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ creating a double-bill known as Barbenheimer.

Nolan’s film has also achieved a significant milestone, crossing the $500 million mark globally within three weeks. Its current worldwide earnings stand at an impressive $552.9 million, surpassing the performance of his 2017 film ‘Dunkirk’ ($527 million), making it Nolan’s fifth highest-grossing movie to date.

In addition to this, ‘Oppenheimer’ now ranks among the four top-grossing biographical films ever, joining the ranks of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ and ‘American Sniper.’ Moreover, it claims the title of the biggest World War II movie of all time.

The success of both ‘Barbie‘ and ‘Oppenheimer’ is undeniable, and with extended theatrical rollouts, it is highly anticipated that they will continue to break even more records in the weeks to come.

Is Greek Military Infrastructure Ready to Support the F-35?

Following the accidental explosion of an ammunition depot at a Greek Air Force base near the city of Volos in late July, there are some concerns that Greece’s military infrastructure may not be ready to facilitate advanced systems like the F-35.

A probe was subsequently launched by the government into the causes of the fire. The findings of that probe were presented on August 4 and will likely have an impact on how the military safely stores weapon systems in the future.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is a 5th Generation stealth fighter and a significant step up in terms of technology and capabilities when compared to Greece’s existing fleet of military aircraft. Procurement of the F-35 constitutes a considerable investment for Greece and proper logistical and infrastructural support systems will need to be in place for the successful operation of the new fighter.

Findings from the Sworn Administrative Examination

On Friday, August 4, 2023, Chief of the General Directorate of Defense, General Konstantinos Floros, presented the findings of the Sworn Administrative Examination (EDE) regarding the factors contributing to the fire outbreak at the ammunition warehouse, numbered 111. The conclusive report was handed over to Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, at the Fighter Wing headquarters.

It was previously known that the explosion of the ammunition depot had been caused by the spread of local wildfires to the military base. This was largely due to high winds. However, the purpose of the probe was to uncover more about whether the necessary measures were taken on the base to prevent such incidents from occurring.

According to the Greek state broadcaster ERT, the report found that “As far as the camp’s fire safety measures are concerned, faulty cleaning was found in its sloping and difficult northern part, from where the fire reached and approached the area of open and closed warehouses.”

ERT further reports that “The very small fire zone around the warehouses was not enough to prevent the intense heat load due to the fire that spread to the above-mentioned non-deforested part of the Camp, and combined with its turbulence and the speed of the wind, it quickly moved towards the area of ammunition”.

The commander of the 111th Combat Wing was reportedly relieved of his duties. The government probe also noted that “for the omissions and negligence of Air Force officials recorded in the conclusion of the EDE, the corresponding responsibilities will be attributed.”

Greek military infrastructure and the procurement of the F-35

Although the government probe into the recent ammunition depot incident does not directly pertain to Greece’s procurement of the F-35, it does raise important questions; namely, is Greek military infrastructure ready to facilitate an advanced stealth fighter that costs on average $75 million per unit?

Logistics is an often unglamorous and underappreciated aspect of military practice but it can determine the success or failure of any fighting force. Greek military aviators are among the best in the world, but they depend on efficient logistics and infrastructure to complete missions. Of course, this includes the safe storage of munitions and vehicles.

Greece is expected to receive its first batch of F-35s in 2028. By then, the Greek military will want to have implemented any relevant findings from the recent report to improve fire safety in its facilities.

Turkey’s FM Highlights Opportunity to Improve Relations With Greece

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is optimistic that a “great opportunity” now exists for the improvement of bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey.

Athens and Ankara have often been at odds over a range of geostrategic issues, with relations being especially thorny in recent years. Deep disagreements persist over territorial boundaries in the Aegean Sea and over the status of Cyprus, for example.

However, a sense of cautious optimism has developed in diplomatic circles since February this year when Greece dispatched assistance to Turkey in the wake of devastating earthquakes.

Turkish foreign minister optimistic about Greece and Turkey’s bilateral relations

“We aim to maintain positive relations with all countries in our region. Regarding the issues where we differ with our neighbor, Greece, we believe this positive climate presents a significant opportunity for resolution,” said Fidan.

“We approach this matter with sincerity and hope for reciprocation from the Greek side,” the Turkish foreign minister added.

However, Fidan also stressed that Turkey would continue to protect its interests in the Aegean and wider Mediterranean region.

Fidan was appointed the role of foreign minister relatively recently in June earlier this year. Prior to taking on this position, he became Turkey’s youngest-ever intelligence chief when he took the helm of the Turkish National Intelligence Agency (MIT) in 2010.

The new minister is no stranger to the diplomatic world; during his tenure as spy chief, Fidan engaged in largely private back-channel diplomatic discussions with Turkey’s friends and foes. For some time, MIT existed as the sole back-channel for Turkey to engage with Israel and other nations with which relations had significantly deteriorated.

A  friendlier diplomatic landscape?

Both Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emerged recently from their respective national elections with their political positions intact. Direct discussions between the pair are said to have entirely broken down last year and were only resumed when parts of Turkey were leveled by earthquakes this February.

In July, Mitsotakis and Erdoğan had the opportunity to meet on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Lithuania. It was agreed that the positive climate in bilateral relations in recent months should have both “continuity and consistency,” as this would be in the interests of the two countries.

Mitsotakis later described the meeting as “an opportunity for a restart in relations with Turkey following four difficult years.”

“It confirmed my view that Turkey appears to be ready for a change in direction in its foreign policy,” he said during an interview on Skai TV.

Bear Escapes From Airplane in Dubai

Prime Minister Al-Sudani of Iraq has mandated an investigation after a bear was able to escape from the cargo hold of a plane in Dubai. The incident has caused dispute over who is to blame for the animal’s escape.

Iraqi Airways asserted that it bore no responsibility for the bear breaking free from its enclosure while the plane was in a holding position at Dubai International Airport on Friday.

The departure of the flight was postponed while experts were summoned to tranquilize the bear and safely extract it from the aircraft. The species of the bear has not been identified.

Bear’s escape from plane in Dubai prompts investigation

A video snippet making rounds on social media showed the aircraft’s captain offering apologies to passengers for the departure delay on Friday due to the bear’s attempt to escape.

A voice in the video recording can be heard mentioning that the plane was running an hour behind schedule for its journey to Baghdad, and passengers were requested to disembark until the matter could be resolved.

Dubai International Airport, renowned as the world’s busiest hub for international travel, opted not to provide a statement on the matter.

An undisclosed Iraqi Airways representative claimed under the condition of anonymity that the bear was intended for transport to the capital city of Iraq. They declined to offer the identity of the bear’s owner.

Investigation and comments

On Saturday, Iraqi Airways argued that it bore no responsibility for the animal’s breakout. The airline stated that its crew collaborated with authorities in the United Arab Emirates, who promptly dispatched experts to administer sedation to the bear and facilitate its removal from the aircraft.

The airline stated that the bear’s transportation procedures were conducted in compliance with the law and in alignment with protocols and standards endorsed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Meanwhile, Iraq’s PM, Mohammed Shayya’ Sabbar al Sudani, has ordered an investigation.

The trend of affluent individuals in Iraq, particularly in Baghdad, keeping predatory animals as pets has gained popularity, posing challenges for authorities in effectively implementing legal measures safeguarding wildlife.

In the past, Baghdad’s police have urged citizens to collaborate with authorities to prevent these animals from being released onto the city’s streets or being used as exotic cuisine in restaurants. They encouraged the reporting of such incidents to address the issue.

Battle of Thermopylae: When the Greeks Fought to Defend Western Civilization

Battle of Thermopylae Spartans Leonidas

It was most likely on August 7th of 480 BC that one of the most decisive battles ever recorded in Greek history, the Battle of Thermopylae, took place against the Persian Empire under Xerxes I. This battle, which has come to be the embodiment of the Greek ideal of freedom as later conceptualized by Aristotle, between two powerful forces in Central Greece would determine the fate of Western civilization.

The great Battle of Thermopylae and the valiant fight of the 300 fearless Spartans under the command of warrior King Leonidas against ten thousand elite Persian soldiers is one of the most brilliant moments in ancient Greek history.

In retrospect, it proved to be no less than a fight for the defense of Western Civilization itself. Although the battle itself was lost, the war was won.

The Battle of Thermopylae also provided for great tales of bravery and patriotism for many Greek generations to come. These are tales which will never be forgotten.

Most historians believe that the epic battle took place in August of 480 BC. Thermopylae (“Hot Gates” in English) was a mountain pass with great strategic importance for those traveling south from Thessaly into Central Greece.

This is where the 7,100 men of the allied Greek forces lay in wait for the invading forces.
The quarter-million strong Persian army, under King Xerxes, was advancing in Central Greece with the aim of reaching Athens and taking over the city.

Spartans held strong under Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae

Xerxes was certain that conquering Greece would be easy, given the sheer number of his vast army.

The invaders camped for five days near Thermopylae because they had no idea how many foot soldiers (“hoplites” in Greek) were waiting on the other side of the pass.

They were also waiting for the Persian fleet, which had suffered damage to its ships and was delayed by bad weather off the coast of Magnesia.

When the Persian army finally did attack, the battle went entirely according to plan for the Greeks—at first.

The narrowness of the pass at the middle gate negated the advantage of numbers for the imperial troops. Moreover, the Greek hoplites were better equipped, with long thrusting spears, heavy bronze and wood shields, and body armor.

The Persians had shorter spears, wicker shields, and only thick linen corselets for “armor.” For two days, the Spartans held off the lesser elements of the imperial army. The Medes and Cissians were succeeded by “The Immortals,” the elite troops of King Xerxes, to little avail.

The two opposing armies were essentially representative of the two different approaches to classical warfare.

Spartan vs Persian warfare

The Persians favored long-range assault using archers, followed up by a cavalry charge, while the Greeks favored heavily-armored infantrymen, arranged in a densely-packed formation called a phalanx, with each man carrying a heavy, round bronze shield and fighting at close quarters using spears and swords.

Although the Persian tactic of rapidly firing vast numbers of arrows into the massed enemy must have been an awesome sight, the lightness of the arrows meant that they were largely ineffective against the bronze-armored hoplites.

Indeed, Spartan indifference to this part of the attack was epitomized by Dieneces, who, when told that the Persian arrows would be so dense in the sky as to darken the sun, replied that, in that case, the Spartans would have the pleasure of fighting in the shade.

At close quarters, the longer spears, heavier swords, better armor, and rigid discipline of the phalanx formation meant that the Greek hoplites would hold a clear advantage. In the narrow confines of the mountain pass, the Persians would struggle to make their vastly superior numbers have any military effect.

However, the tide turned when a local man, Ephialtes of Trachis, in exchange for money and favors offered to show the Persians a way around the back of the defending force. Called the “Anopaia Path,” this was a way to skirt the mountain and attack the Greek forces from behind.

Xerxes accepted the traitor’s offer, sending off what was left of his ten thousand “Immortals” at dusk.

According to Herodotus, Leonidas had been aware from the beginning of the existence of the Anopaia Path and had even stationed a thousand Phokians there to halt any attempt at surrounding his forces.

However, the Phokians were taken by surprise and put up little resistance. Word somehow got through to Leonidas that the position had been outflanked, and there seems to have been time to abandon the position and withdraw to the south before the Immortals arrived.

Leonidas fought alongside 300 soldiers at Battle of Thermopylae

Yet Leonidas steadfastly refused to retreat. Allowing everyone else to leave, he kept his 300 Spartans with him, knowing they would fight against the Persians to the last man.

Throughout history there have been innumerable interpretations of his decision to stay and fight until death.

Herodotus represents it as an act of deliberate self-sacrifice carried out in accordance with an oracle, which had said that the death of a Spartan king would save Sparta from destruction.

Other historians took the military approach and argued that Leonidas simply wanted to give the allied contingents time to get away.

After the battle, Xerxes ordered that Leonidas’ head be put on a stake and displayed on the battlefield.

As Herodotus claims in his account of the battle in book VII of The Histories, the Oracle at Delphi had been proven right when she had proclaimed that either Sparta or one of her kings must fall.

Nevertheless, the Battle of Thermopylae and the heroism of Leonidas and his brave hoplites have written one of the most brilliant pages of Greece’s long and rich history.

As for Ephialtes, the greedy traitor, his name eventually became the modern Greek word for “nightmare.”

The significance of the battle for Western Civilization

While the Battle of Thermopylae was technically a defeat for the Greeks, it was also a victory in the long run because it marked the beginning of several important Greek victories against the Persians and boosted the morale of all the Greek city-states.

Encouraged by the incredible bravery of the Spartan action, the surviving allied Greek forces fought with renewed fury against the Persians.

There is no doubt that the drive to fight and win in the two camps was sparked by completely different forces. Herodotus recounted how the Persian King Xerxes had driven his men into battle with whips while the Greeks fought of their own free will: “[The Spartans] did not have to be whipped to make them fight with all their might…Whips were only for slaves, not free men.”

Although the Aristotelian concept of freedom was only formulated a century later by the great philosopher, the men who were citizens of the Greek city-states felt they were fighting to defend their freedom and autonomy.

This notion of freedom could only even begin to develop in a state free of coercion so very unlike the world of the East.

Had the Spartans at Thermopylae and later Greek armies fled in fear, it is likely that a Persian victory would have had the effect of promoting imperial hegemony over the concept of a free city-state, coercion over free will, and authoritarianism over any remote notion of freedom.

Compared to the ancient Greek civilization of the time, the Persians, from a completely militaristic society, behaved as ruthless barbarians.

Xerxes was seen as a merciless monarch and would surely have shown no mercy upon a conquered Greece. There is no doubt that, had his army won, ancient Greece as we know it would have been obliterated and history would have taken a totally different turn.

It was also clearly a battle of two cultures which could not have been more entirely different. If Athens had been taken over by the Persians, there would be no Parthenon, no Aristotle, no Pericles, no Socrates, no Phidias, no Olympic Games, no Hippocrates…and the list goes on.

Seen with the longest of historical views, we can say that if the Greeks had not finally succeeded in driving out the Persian forces, ultimately there would have been no Enlightenment in Europe, nor the development of democracy or the concepts of individual freedom and human rights.
