Golden Dawn MPs Return to Jail After Testifying

golden dawnGolden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos, and MPs Christos Pappas and Yiannis Lagos were brought back to Korydallos Prison in Athens on Friday after refusing to answer the prosecutors’ questions.
The three Golden Dawn members, facing charges of illegal possession of weapons and explosives, decided to submit written depositions to the investigating prosecutor and dismissed all charges against them as “groundless.”
The MPs claimed that the guns found in their homes by police were for “personal protection.”
Prosecutors decided that Michaloliakos should be placed under house arrest, while no additional ruling was issued for Pappas. However the ruling cannot be executed since all three MPs are remanded into custody at Korydallos Prison pending trial on charges of running a criminal organization.
There was tension outside the Court of Appeals in Athens by Golden Dawn party supporters. When the police vehicle transferring Michaloliakos, Pappas and Lagos arrived at the Court building, in order for MPs to give their supplementary testimonies, the crowd tried to approach them. Police made use of tear gas, while two journalists are reported as injured, one still hospitalized.
MPs Nikos Michos and Ilias Kasidiaris were granted an extension to submit their supplementary testimonies on July 9 and 10 respectively.
