Giscard d’Estaign Suggests Greece to Consider Euro-Exit

Former French President Valery Giscard d’Estaing suggested Athens to seriously consider exiting the Euro in order to avoid imposing further financial tortures upon its people.

Although the former French President had once supported Greece’s accession in the European Economic Community and the Eurozone afterwards, in his interview to Reuters news agency, d’Estaign said Greece is facing a difficult choice.

“Greece could stay in the Eurozone but it is very difficult to achieve economic recovery with a strong currency,” the 85-year-old former president told Reuters. “Is it better to use a national currency for a period or have the safety of a strong currency? It is Greece’s choice.”

Anyhow, he seemed positive Greece would remain in the European Union, whether the country chose to keep the common currency or not.

Asked about French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s repeated assertion that it would be disastrous if one country were to leave the euro, Giscard said: “He is wrong”.

According to Giscard, Europe must defend itself against speculators, whom he suspects to be mainly serving American interests.

Olympiacos Beat Arsenal But Bow Out

0

Olympiacos FC produced a stirring display to defeat Group F winners Arsenal 3-1 but bowed out of the UEFA Champions League in dramatic fashion due to events elsewhere.
Two goals up at half-time through Rafik Djebbour and David Fuster, the Greek side were pegged back by Yossi Benayoun’s splendid volley before re-establishing their two-goal cushion through François Modesto in the final minute.
With maximum points and a place in the last 16 alongside Arsenal imminent, the celebrations were abruptly halted as news filtered through that Olympique de Marseille had scored twice late on to win 3-2 at Borussia Dortmund, snatch second place and leave Ernesto Valverde’s side in the UEFA Europa League.

Greek Lawmakers Passed Austerity Budget

Greece’s lawmakers  passed next year’s budget on Tuesday night. The budget extends tough austerity measures that have already left Greeks struggling as the country tries to slash its debts and pull itself out of a severe recession.
With three parties, including the country’s majority socialists and their rival conservatives, involved in Greece’s new coalition government, the budget passed with an overwhelming majority in a midnight vote (258 for and 41 against).
The budget foresees a fourth year of recession in 2012, although it also projects a primary surplus — a surplus excluding interest payments on debt — of 1.1 percent of gross domestic product.
