Crete Inhabited in 130,000 BC!

The archaeological team of the University of North Carolina in the U.S., analyzing soil and tools, concluded that Homo Erectus traveled to Crete and lived there almost 100,000 years earlier than originally believed, from as early as 130,000 BC.
Scientists believe that Homo Erectus tribes inhabited the island travelling from areas of North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Archaeologists have also found axes and weapons similar to those found in Africa dating from around 800,000 years ago.
”Thanks to radiocarbon dating techniques, we can now say with confidence that the tools and weapons we found date back 50-130,000 years BC” stated geologist Carl Hugman of the University of North Carolina, adding that ”the tools show that the inhabitants of the island, the first ancestors of the Minoans, were excellent craftsmen and capable of large structures. ”
So far, the oldest settlement found in Crete dates back to 7,000 BC.

S&P: Greece Is Likely To Default Later This Year

0

David Beers, head of global sovereign ratings at Standard & Poor΄s, said that Greece that it is likely to be in default later this year, according to Dow Jones Newswires.
There is likely to be another restructuring, even after an agreement for debt relief and an extension of maturities of debt, he said.
That rescue package is already in danger of being undermined by a separate deal under which Finland would receive collateral in exchange for extending new loans to Greece, as other countries have asked for similar treatment, according to Beers.
Finally, he defended S&P’s decision to downgrade the U.S.΄s sovereign credit rating and said market volatility would not deter it from other rating cuts when justified.
Beers said the U.S. Treasury Department was “disingenuous” in claiming the firm made a $2 trillion miscalculation.
“There was no math error” as the Treasury Department suggested, he said, adding that the $2 trillion in question had not affected the downgrade decision as it reflected longer term calculations that were actually beyond the timeframe of its assessment.

Political Ferments Ahead Of TIF

0

“The Prime Minister would follow up the International Fair of Thessalonica (TIF) schedule. His presence would be meaningful and plain”, said George Papandreou’s office, according to Greek broadcaster Mega Channel, denying rumors that there would be no PM speech.
According to the official statement, George Papandreou would address the representatives of productive classes on September 10, and give the customary press conference the following day.
However, it remains unknown what he would decide to speak of. Two years after the infamous “there is money” quote, the Prime Minister would attend TIF, while the agreement of the EU Summit in July is at risk.
Initial talks at the Maximos Hall –the PM’s office- indicate that Papandreou would focus on two areas: liquidity and employment, and attempt to convince Greek people that despite delays, investment plan is still achievable.
