Greece Summons Turkish Ambassador To Protest Migrant Arrivals on Lesvos

The Greek Foreign Ministry in Athens.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendas summoned the Turkish Ambassador to Greece, Burak Özügergin, on Friday to protest the huge numbers of migrants who arrived from Turkish shores to Greece’s Lesvos Island on Thursday.
According to Greek media reports, Dendias expressed Greece’s profound dissatisfaction with the recent developments.
The Greek Foreign Minister reminded the Turkish Ambassador of Turkey’s obligation to fulfill the requirements of the so-called EU-Turkey Deal of 2016, which were intended to put an end to illegal immigration from Turkey.
According to the same reports, the Turkish Ambassador told the Greek Minister that he will brief the Turkish authorities, and added that Turkey remains focused on the full implementation of the Joint Declaration between the EU and Turkey.
Greece has already briefed the EU authorities about the recent rise in the numbers of illegal migrants setting out from Turkey and arriving on Greek shores.
In order to ease the great burden placed on the island of Lesvos, the Greek government decided on Friday to transfer 1,002 highly vulnerable refugees out of the Moria camp on the island to the Nea Kavala center in the area of Kilkis in Central Macedonia, northern Greece.
The migrant transfer will take place on September 3.
