Turkey launched its largest annual military exercise, dubbed ”Sea Wolf,” (Denizkurdu in Turkish) on Monday.
The exercise is currently taking place across three fronts, including the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea.
The country’s general staff issued a statement noting that thirty-three helicopters, fifty-seven warplanes and 131 warships will take part in this year’s large-scale exercise, which is being supervised by the Turkish Navy.
The exercise will deal with a range of scenarios, including raising tensions with Turkey’s neighbors and wartime simulations.
The exercise is expected to end on May 25, amid an atmosphere of rising tensions between all the players in the Mediterranean region.
On Sunday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which it claimed that Greece does not respect the demilitarized status of the islands of the eastern Aegean Sea. The statement further called on all NATO warships and vessels currently operating in the region to refrain from using Greek island ports eastern Aegean for visits and refueling.
