The defense ministers of Greece and Turkey, Evangelos Apostolakis and Hulusi Akar, met together on Wednesday in Brussels. The ministers were both in the capital city for a ministerial summit among NATO members.
The meeting lasted for approximately 30 minutes but no official statement was made following the discussions.
The two men are known to have mutual respect and a warm relationship, since they know each other from the time when they both were the chiefs of the military in Greece and Turkey.
According to Greek media reports, the Brussels meeting focused on ways to enhance agreements which already exist, such as the ”Papoulias – Yilmaz” memorandum of understanding. This agreement established the rules under which the two countries conduct military exercises in the broader region of the Aegean.
The memorandum’s main goal was to avoid military tensions during the summer months, when tourists flood the Mediterranean and there are major holy day celebrations in both Christianity and Islam.
