Olive Oil in Bulk Banned from Use in Greek Restaurants in 2018

The very popular and always on demand olive oil served in Greek restaurants, will be under new regulations starting in the new year.
According to the new regulations, olive oil served in food establishments will have to be officially bottled. Another Greek tradition of local restaurants offering customers self-produced olive oil in bulk, will be gone by January 1.
Any establishments found not following the new regulations from the start of 2018, will  automatically receive an administrative fine of €500.
The regulation that was passed by the Finance Ministry, took under consideration both the quality of local olive oil, as well as the health of the customers. The ministry’s concern was for the used bottles in which olive oil was served, which could affect the customers’ health.
The Greek Confederation of Merchant and Traders (GESEVEE) is on board with the new regulation, which, it claims, will be in the best national interest. The confederation believes there will be no issues during implementation and merchants and restaurateurs will not be needing a test period.
According to GESEVEE president Giorgos Kavathas, the new measures will ensure the quality of Greek olive oil, protect the consumers, and help create a brand name for the product around the world.
