Perth Glendi Greek Festival Returns This Sunday!

perth glendi 2015The final countdown to the Perth Glendi Greek Festival has begun and it is set to take place this Sunday, October 23!

This day is one that many in the Hellenic community have been waiting for as it celebrates the Greek culture with food, music, dance and a raffle to win a trip for two to Greece.

Everyone is welcome to this event and over 20,000 people who are both members of the diaspora as well as philhellenes are expected to attend the Glendi and enjoy dancing, breaking plates cooking demos and much more. There will also be special children’s activities as well as a fun fair.

In 2015 over 2,000 people participated in the Zorba Dance and this year at the 2016 Glendi organizers from the Hellenic Community of WA hope to break the largest dance world record. There is a $2 donation per person to participate in the dance and all proceeds from raffles tickets and profits go to not-for-profit organizations.

Last year was the first Glendi in eight years and organizers are thrilled with the community turnout.

“We’re delighted with the support. It indicates and reflects that there’s a big interest in Greek culture in Perth and it appeals to not just the Greeks, but to people from all walks of life and nationalities that come to get their Greek on…It’s a great way of uniting people from all different backgrounds,” the event spokeswoman Despene Kalaf explained to Neos Kosmos.

The event will take place at Russell Square in Northbridge at the corners of James and Shenton Street from 11am to 8pm.
