“Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is panicking”, the president of the Union of Centrists party; Vassilis Leventis claimed in an interview on Sunday.
During a 6 hour meeting on Saturday, six of Greece’s eight political party leaders were unable to agree on taking a common stance on the social security system.
Leventis appeared on MEGA TV on Sunday and noted that from the meeting he sensed that Tsipras is worried about the fate of his the fragile coalition government, which consists of 153 MPs. The government recently removed two MPs for not voting in favor of government sponsored austerity measures and reforms.
The Union of Centrists president further claimed that he believes that the Greek Prime Minister will try to give everything Europe is asking for on the refugee front in order to secure better terms for upcoming reforms to social security system.
During Saturday’s meeting, Leventis asked Tsipras for a national unity government, which the prime minister denied.
Although, Tsipras seems to be holding firm on his coalition partnership with the Independent Greeks (ANEL), Leventis believes he is panicking. Leventis confirmed that Tispras asked him to have a one on one meeting, and noted that he believes Tsipras sees him as his last hope.
SYRIZA has vehemently rejected co-governing with the political parties of New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami. Amid a weakening government majority, Leventis, whose party entered the Greek parliament in September for the first time in its history with nine seats, is often being portrayed as a political force Tsipras could turn to for support. The Greek Prime Minister’s unwillingness to begin enforcing nine policy points that Leventis sent to him immediately following the elections, has thwarted a potential collaboration.
