New Democracy Opens Lead Over SYRIZA

New DemocracyGreek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ relentless drumbeat that he has saved Greece from economic  collapse, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary, nonetheless is paying off as a poll by the MRB agency shows his New Democracy Conservatives have a 2.3 percent lead over the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) after being neck-and-neck for months.
The survey showed New Democracy with 27.9 percent supported compared to 25.6 percent for SYRIZA, which opposes austerity measures being imposed by the government on the orders of international lenders.
Equally surprising however was the showing of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party which placed third with 13.4 percent, almost double the 6.97 percent it won in 2012’s elections when it gained 18 seats in Parliament. The party’s standing seems to rise with every new provocation it makes.
The Independent Greeks are far back in fourth with 6.9 percent, followed by the two coalition partners in Samaras’ government, the PASOK Socialists at 6.4 percent and Democratic Left (DIMAR) at 6.2 percent. Then comes the KKE Communists with an equally irrelevant 5.8 percent. No other party hit the 3 percent threshold needed to win seats in the Parliament.
To the question who is the most suitable for prime minister, respondents gave Samaras 43.2% and SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras 23.7% while 31.2% of the respondents said ‘no one’
