Nuremberg Greeks Denounce Golden Dawn

golden dawnThe Federation of Greek Communities of Germany has condemned the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, which has 18 seats in the Greek Parliament and is rising in power on the back of a nationalist anti-immigrant stance and has been criticized as being anti-Semitic. The party is establishing an office in Nuremberg, the city where war crimes trials against Nazi leaders was held after World War II.

In a statement, the Greek organization said, “With great surprise and repulsion the communities of Greek immigrants in Germany were informed about the right-wing extremist, Neo-Nazi Golden Dawn offices’ establishment in Nuremberg.”

The announcement noted that Nuremberg was not accidentally selected by Golden Dawn, since, in 1935 the notorious racist laws of the Third Reich were passed there. The Greek group noted that similar protests against the extremist group had been made in the U.S. and Australia.

“Nationalism and hostility against any different idea, color, religion do not belong in any immigrant community. We have decided to use all legal means and our massive physical presence to stop nationalism and racism,” The federation stated among other elements of its opposition to the party, which has risen to third place among Greek political groups, surpassing the once-dominant PASOK Socialists.

The federation remarked about news stories alleging that Golden Dawn members have been behind anti-Semitic graffiti, although the party’s officials have denied it and said they have no links to Nazism, although they use a Nazi salute and have Hitler’s Mein Kamp among their headquarters literature. Golden Dawn says its philosophy is closer to Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas, who ruled Greece between 1936-41 and is revered by the party.
