Shark in Salamina?


On Saturday,  August 12, three people made grievance to the Police, that possibly a shark is swimming close to Salamina Sea.
Authorities has not yet confirmed this. Probably was a sea dog and not a shark, stated the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The authorities searched the area but nothing was found. Further investigation will follow if an incident occurs again.
Hellenic Coast Guard is taking precausions.

Sokratis Malamas at Technopolis

After a series of many successful concerts throughout Greece, Sokratis Malamas returns to Athens.
His last performance in Lycabitos in July was sold out, with a full house, surpassing all expectations.
As a result, Sokratis comes back for his fans in Athens, this time at Technopolis, Gazi, on the 1st of September, exceptional musicians at his side, as always.

High Rate of Students Leaving Private Schools

According to an article in the Greek newspaper “Ethnos”, the economic crisis has also hit the private schools.
It is estimated that the number of students attending private schools this year will be decreased by 25%. It seems that parents who belong to the middle class can no longer pay the very expensive tuition and have decided to enroll their children in public schools. According to statistics, seven private schools 0 nursery schools have already been closed.
Since the school year 2008-2009, when the economic crisis broke out, till now 17,000 students have left private schools. In 2000, when there was a high rate of new private schools opening all over the country, 91,500 students were enrolled.  There were also 40 schools belonging to embassies, the American community etc who had another 6,500 students.

Three Greek Movies at the 35th International Film Festival in Montreal

The 35th Montreal International Film Festival opens with the participation of three films of Greek co-production.
The short film “A Perfect Day” by director Evris Papanikolas tells the story of a meeting of three odd couples at a gas station, two boys travelling in a stolen boat, two drunk women, and two police officers who make virtual war with their arms, waiting to wash their cars.
Papanikolas originates from Egypt and comes from the world of commercials. The screening of the film will be 24, 25 and 26 August in various venues of the festival.
The film “Amnesty” is a Greek-French-Albanian production from Bujar Alimanim 90 Productions / Patos (Albanie), Thanos Anastopoulos, Fantasia Ltd., Guillau. The director of the film is Albanian Bujar Alimani and photography director is Elias Adamis. Starring: Luli Bitri, Aktori Karafil Shena, Todi Llupi, Mirela Naska, Aleksander Rrapi,  the story revolves around the prison in Tirana, where a new law has passed allowing sex to emprisoned married couples.
 Elsa travels once a month by bus to visit her husband who is emprisoned for illegal betting. Sfetim makes the same trip  as his wife is behind bars, too. Elsa and Sfetim meet, fall in love and console each other for the absence of their partners. Until one day their spouses are released from prison.
The film will be screened on August 19,20,23,27.
The Greek Cypriot production ”FISH N ‘CHIPS”, from director Elias Dimitriou, with producers Monica Nicolaides, George Pantzis, Constantine Moriatis, Elias Dimitriou etc shows particular interest. Director of photography is George Giannelis, while starring MariosIoannou, Marlene Kaminski, Anne Marie O’ Sullivan, Diomedes Koufteros and Alkistis Pavlidis.
Andie, a hardworking cook in a fast food restaurant in London, is dismissed and decides to return to Cyprus with his mother, his girlfriend Karen and her daughter to open a fast food restaurant ”Fish n Chips”. The fast food restaurant fails because things do not work in Cyprus as in London. Andie is left alone finding himself as a tourist in his own country.
The film will be screened in the Festival Halls on 23,24,25,26 August.

Sinodinos to Replace Helen Coonan in Senate for NSW Liberal Party

Rumours say that with Helen Coonan quiting the Senate, Greek Australian politician and NSW Liberal Party president Arthur Sinodinos is likely to take her place. The Liberal Party has made it clear that if Sinodinos wants this position, it’s his for the taking.

Coonan is leaving the Senate due to an illness in her family. In her retirement speech, Senator Coonan urged for more transparency in foreign investment, especially from China.

Sinodinos became president of the NSW Liberal party after an overwhelming show of support by Liberal party delegates in an effort to bring honesty to the party.

 

 

 

Giorgos Dalaras States “Aegean Sea Belongs to the Fish!”

According to newsbeast.gr, Giorgos Dalaras gave an interview to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyetwhile he was in Istanbul to give a concert.

In this interview he said that people are meant to live all together. Borders are defined by mathematicians and landscape painters, not by God.

In addition, he said that the Aegean Sea does not belong neither to  Turks nor to Greeks but in reality, it belongs to the fish!

Concerning Cyprus, the famous singer said that there are problems raised by Turkey, Greece and Britain, because soldiers want to leave the island and people want to be united and live together.

Greece Large Banks In Major Initiatives Regarding Proton Bank

Greece’s four largest banks (National Bank, Eurobank, Alpha, Piraeus Bank) informed the Bank of Greece that heave decided to respond positively to the proposal of Proton Bank and participate in necessary initiatives for a new era of the bank, based on comprehensive business plan and in conjunction with the current administrative changes in Proton Bank.
According to a statement, the four banks consider positively their participation in the already decided share capital increase of Proton, through a convertible bond loan of €50 million.
Simultaneously with the reshuffle of Proton board, the Bank of Greece has appointed its own Commissioner to facilitate and support the operation of the new board.
The new directors of Proton Bank are executives with long experience and trusted by the Bank of Greece and the four banks.
The board of Proton will have examined all the options of strategic alliances as soon as possible.
These actions and initiatives form the framework of purification and new course of Proton Bank.

More than 1,000 of Greek Companies Moving to Cyprus Rises

More than 1,000 companies of Greek interest have transferred their headquarters to Cyprus in the past 20 months, due to the financial crisis in Greece, CNA writes citing a report carried out by the Greek embassy in Nicosia. According to the survey, a total of one 1,500 companies have transferred their headquarters to Cyprus. The majority of those are financial institutions, service related firms, retail and construction companies. Central Bank of Cyprus related data, cited in the report, shows that 59 Greek companies were registered in Cyprus in 2009 whereas in 2010 this number rose to 248. In the first five months of 2011, 107 new companies were registered. Moreover, almost one hundred of the companies registered here, have undertaken projects in the public sector.
In 2009 Greek investments in Cyprus amounted to 710.2 million euro. The report also shows that a huge number of Greek citizens are looking for a job in Cyprus. There are a total of 10.000 thousand Greeks registered in the Social Insurance Scheme, whereas a total of 1.739 persons have been registered for unemployment benefits.

BASE Jumping at Zakynthos' Navaghio

Participants of the spectacular sport of “BASE jumping” will offer spectators a unique spectacle at the popular “Navaghio” (shipwreck) beach on Zakynthos island this week.
BASE, the acronym formed from the first letters of the words building, antenna, span and earth, has gained in popularity over the past few years, as daredevils attempt perform a free fall from steep cliffs or other objects, usually from a height of no less than 200 metres. Afterwards they continue the fall with a parachute. Lack of light winds remains a prerequisite for a base jump fall.
Twenty participants from Finland, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, the USA and Italy are taking part in the three-day event.

Greek Companies Launder Money for Bulgarian Mafia

An estimated twenty five Greek companies provide cover for the Bulgarian mafia, acting in northern Greece.
The information comes from a joint probe of Bulgarian and Greek police, cited by the Bulgarian 24 Chassa (24 Hours) daily.  The Greek companies launder money from illegal drugs and weapons trading and human trafficking.
In partnership with 10 bogus Bulgarian companies, the Greek conducted fake deals amounting to hundreds of millions of euros a year in scams to illegally drain Value Added Tax (VAT).
The tax fraud was discussed as early as May 2011 by Bulgarian Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Christos Papoutsis, the Greek Minister for Citizen Protection. This is when the probe began as well.
