A total of 1,121 cases of Covid-19 were diagnosed in Greece on Tuesday, spiking sharply yet again as the country was blanketed with a thick layer of snow.

The cases diagnosed on Tuesday represent 423 more than those recorded in the country just one day earlier, on Monday.

Over half of the 1,121 cases diagnosed in Greece were found in Attica, where a total of 538 instances of the coronavirus were identified.

Athens, Greece’s capital and largest city, is located in Attica.

Transmission of the virus has been particularly high in the center of Athens for weeks, where 170 cases of the virus were identified on Tuesday.

In Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 144 cases of Covid-19 were identified in the last 24 hours.

Tragically, 29 people with the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which is three more than those recorded yesterday.

Currently, 309 patients with Covid-19 are now intubated in Greece, 10 more than those who were intubated in the country on Monday.

Vaccinations halted in Attica due to snow

Due to the dangerous driving conditions, including icy, slippery roads and reduced visibility, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged citizens to remain at home and avoid all unnecessary movement outside the home.

“We are facing a very severe weather phenomenon and it seems that it will last until tomorrow morning. It will impact Attica, Evia, and Crete, especially tomorrow,” he stated.

Health officials have put a hold on coronavirus vaccinations in Attica due to the heavy snow and dangerous driving conditions.

All vaccine appointments for Tuesday will be moved to another day, so those in line for the shot will still receive their inoculation.

Total 173,905 Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total 173,905 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, 50 are associated with foreign travel and 1,800 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 309 patients intubated currently, 87.4% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions, and their median age is 70.

Additionally, a total of 1,231 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 29 new deaths recorded on Tuesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 6,181.

The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 79, and 95.6% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
