New Democracy Accuses Tsipras of Supporting “extremist” European Parties

178px-European_Left_logo.svgThe European left announced last week, that Alexis Tsipras, the leader of SYRIZA, will be nominated for EU Commission president in Brussels. Now, New Democracy accuses Alexis Tsipras for believing in “anti-euro” policy, and of supporting “extremist” European parties.
Anna Asimakopoulou, the spokesperson of New Democracy said on Monday, that “Parties that are marginal, Marxist, Trotskyist and fanatically opposed to the euro and euro zone, see Mr. Alexis Tsipras as the person to best express them.” Mr. Andreas Papamikos, the secretary of New Democracy, who also stated that the European Left parties have been accused of extremism, seems to be of the same opinion.
As Mr. Papamikos said, Mr. Tsipras is now investing in the extreme factions abroad, after the extreme faction within Greece. Also, he said “It would be extremely interesting if Mr. Alexis Tsipras presented these parties to the Greek people.”
The party of SYRIZA responded to his comments represented by MP Dimitris Papadimoulis via Twitter on Sunday. Mr. Papadimoulis said that New Democracy had accepted former LAOS politicians Makis Voridis and Adonis Georgiadis into their party, even though they had extreme views in the past.
The nomination of Mr. Alexis Tsipras will be announced officially in the congress of leftist parties in Madrid, between December 13 and 15. The leaders of European left parties gathered in Spain on Friday in order to decide on Tsipras candidacy. According to sources, the leftists want the Commission president to be elected by the European voters rather than nominated by the European Council and then approved by the European Parliament.
