Contracts Approved for Conservation Project at Archangel Michael Church

archangel michael church cyprusThe Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, the European Commission, and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have announced the approval for conservation works at Archangel Michael Church.
A press release sent to the media on Monday says that conservation works to the church will last eight months and will cost approximately 390,000 euros, fully funded by the European Union.
With this project the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage aims at consolidating and stabilizing the church to the maximum extent possible, in order to bring the building back to its original state.
The church will undergo major structural consolidation. Inside the church, frescoes and the carved woodwork of the matroneum will be stabilized and preserved by a specialized conservation expert.
Externally, the portico roof will be reconstructed and the old school building consolidated and protected. The yard and the perimeter wall will be upgraded and improved.
Other conservation works include: cleaning of dressed stones surfaces, pointing, removal of re-pointing and new stone carving, as well as removal and reconstruction of the existing roof, doors and windows.
Informative meetings will be held by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and UNDP regarding chosen conservation methodologies and work plans.
Since 2012, approximately €8.1 million of European Union funds have been provided by the European Commission to implement the priorities of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage for the preservation of the island-wide cultural heritage in Cyprus. The European Union has also recently allocated a further €3.6 million, making it the biggest supporter of the work of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage in Cyprus.
