Government Vice President Yiannis Dragasakis received harsh critiscism during the meeting of the SYRIZA Political Secretariat when he said that Athens will be ready to sign an agreement with creditors by May 19.
In the past few days there have been many expressions of dissent within SYRIZA regarding the progress of negotiations. The left platform of SYRIZA has repeatedly asked Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras not to cross the “red lines” set by the party in the negotiations.
On Thursday’s five-hour meeting of the political secretariat, SYRIZA MP and House Speaker Zoe Konstantopoulou criticized harshly the government for being too compliant in negotiations and for abandoning its pledges to the Greek people. She said that the lenders’ demands  are simply not acceptable and go against the people’s will.
At the same time another SYRIZA member and Deputy House Speaker, Alexis Mitropoulos, stated that it was a mistake that the government accepted the Eurogroup agreement of February 20, while he hinted that the responsibility of that mistake falls to Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.
In a statement issued a statement after the meeting by the SYRIZA political secretariat. In the statement the party announces that the government must follow the people’s mandate and not sign any agreement that requires austerity measures. The announcement also accuses Europe for insisting on austerity and blackmailing Greece in accepting its unpopular demands.
