US armed forces bombed Iran for a second consecutive night, striking “dozens of targets” aimed at weakening Tehran’s control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. In response, Tehran claimed to have struck multiple US military bases across the Gulf.
The violent escalation over the weekend, coupled with Iran’s announcement of an indefinite closure of the strait, a critical chokepoint for global oil transit, triggered a sharp spike in crude prices as Asian markets opened on Monday.
Overnight strikes and targets
The US military launched the new wave of bombardment at 12:30 AM Tehran time. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the completion of the five-hour operation early this morning. According to CENTCOM, the precision strikes targeted key military infrastructure used to threaten maritime traffic, including:
- Air defense systems and coastal surveillance radars
- Missile and drone (UAV) capabilities
- Small, high-speed naval vessels
Iranian state media reported that the attacks hit sectors in western and southern Iran, focusing heavily on Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the Iraq-bordering Khuzestan province.
Shipping incidents and Iran’s counterattack
Washington maintained that the objective is, as was the case with previous strikes, to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian crews and commercial vessels. The US specifically blamed Tehran for a weekend attack on the GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the strait. The Sultanate of Oman confirmed that 23 crew members were rescued, while a search continues for one missing sailor.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of destroying months of diplomatic efforts to restore peace in the Middle East. In swift retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced targeted strikes against US military installations across the region, including:
- Jordan: Prince Hassan Air Base
- Bahrain: A US drone command and control center
- Kuwait: The Ali Al Salem and Ahmad al-Jaber air bases
Air defense sirens were activated in Bahrain during the early morning hours, with the Ministry of Interior urging residents to remain calm and move to the nearest secure locations. Additionally, Jordan’s military confirmed that Iran launched three missiles into its territory on Sunday, while Kuwait reported targeting at any offshore oil platform and three border outposts, though it stopped short of explicitly naming Tehran.
