Alaska Airlines announced Thursday a new nonstop flight to Athens, Greece, becoming the first carrier to connect Seattle directly with the Greek capital. The airline will be the only one flying nonstop between the West Coast and Athens once the seasonal route begins in May 2027.

The new service, flight AS196, will operate three times a week between Seattle and Athens starting May 12, 2027, and continuing through October. The return flight from Athens to Seattle begins the following day, May 13.

Once launched, the nonstop Alaska Airlines flight to Athens will become the longest route the carrier has ever flown. The flight number honors Athens as the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games, first held there in 1896.

Tickets for the Athens route went on sale Thursday. The airline is offering introductory round-trip fares in Main Cabin available to customers in the United States through Aug. 26.

Alaska Airlines Chief Executive Ben Minicucci said that the airline flies to places its customers have long wanted to visit, noting that Athens has ranked among its most requested destinations for years.

He said the new route fits into a broader plan to add more than a dozen international long-haul connections from Seattle in the coming years, giving travelers more ways to connect around the world and more opportunities to use the airline’s Atmos Rewards program.

Athens International Airport Managing Director and CEO George Kallimasias welcomed the announcement, calling it the first nonstop connection between Athens and the Pacific Northwest.

He said the route would strengthen ties between the Greek capital and the United States and open opportunities for tourism, business and trade with the West Coast.
