Madonna may be making headlines, with reports placing the pop icon in Corfu for her birthday. Still, she is only the latest internationally famous visitor to choose Greece this summer.
From Hollywood actors and music stars to sporting legends, a steady stream of high-profile visitors has appeared across the country in recent months. And while Mykonos remains the most visible celebrity magnet, this summer’s arrivals show that Greece’s appeal increasingly extends from the Aegean islands to Athens, the Peloponnese and the Ionian Sea.
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey was spotted on Mykonos in late July, adding his name to a growing list of Hollywood figures visiting the island this summer.
Just days earlier, Sofía Vergara had also been enjoying Mykonos, while Justin Bieber and his wife, Hailey Bieber, chose a quieter family vacation in the Peloponnese and Spetses.
Kate Hudson, meanwhile, continued a much longer relationship with Greece. The actress spent part of her summer with her family in the country, traveling from the Sporades to the Athenian Riviera.
Mykonos remains the celebrity capital
Mykonos once again attracted some of the highest-profile names of the summer.
Kevin Hart and Ludacris arrived on the island together in June, while basketball legend Michael Jordan returned to Greece aboard his yacht. Katy Perry and Nicole Kidman were also spotted vacationing on the “island of winds.”
The island’s ability to attract global celebrities is hardly new. But the concentration of famous visitors this summer has reinforced its position as one of the Mediterranean’s most recognizable luxury destinations.
Yet the Bieber family’s choice of Spetses and the wider Ermionida region, along with Kate Hudson‘s travels beyond the islands traditionally associated with celebrity tourism, point to a broader shift.
Beyond the usual Greek islands
Greece offers something increasingly valuable to celebrities: the ability to combine internationally known luxury destinations with relative privacy.
Mykonos and Santorini remain global brands, but visitors can move quickly to quieter islands, private villas, coastal resorts and yacht destinations without leaving the country.
Spetses, the Peloponnese, the Sporades, the Athenian Riviera and Corfu offer very different versions of the Greek summer. That variety may be part of the reason Greece continues to attract both celebrities seeking public nightlife and those looking for a more discreet escape.
The country’s appeal is also supported by strong tourism demand. Greek Reporter reported earlier this year that advance bookings for the 2026 summer season were rising, while Greece’s short-term rental market was experiencing growing demand.
Meanwhile, Greek islands continue to perform strongly in international travel rankings. In a Condé Nast Traveller ranking covered by Greek Reporter, Naxos took the top spot among Europe’s best islands, with several other Greek destinations also featured.
Madonna gives Corfu the latest celebrity moment
Against that backdrop, Madonna’s reported plans to celebrate her birthday in Corfu fit into a much wider story.
The singer, who turns 68 on August 16, would bring one of the world’s most recognizable names to an island already known internationally for its distinctive history, architecture and landscape.
But her reported arrival is also a reminder that Greece’s celebrity appeal is no longer confined to one destination—or one type of visitor.
