A memorial service was held at the Souda Bay Allied War Cemetery in Vlites, Chania, to honor the Allied forces who bravely stood alongside the people of Crete during the historic Battle of Crete in May 1941.

Marking the 85th anniversary of the battle, this year’s commemoration was elevated by the official presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, who traveled to the island to pay tribute to the British and Commonwealth soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Organized by the British Embassy in Athens, the service was attended by Princess Anne (sister to King Charles III), who was accompanied by her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and the British Ambassador to Greece, Matthew Lodge.

The Princess Royal was officially welcomed to the island by high-ranking Greek government officials, including Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni and Deputy Minister of Migration and Asylum Sevi Voloudaki, as well as local MPs and regional mayors.

Princess Anne’s powerful tribute to the Battle of Crete

The ceremony served as a powerful focal point for veterans, military representatives, and descendants of the Commonwealth forces from the UK, Australia, Canada, India, and New Zealand. Many traveled thousands of miles to Chania to commemorate the historic 1941 defense of the island.

A deeply moving moment occurred when Princess Anne addressed the congregation, leading the prayers with verses from the Beatitudes:

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.”

International unity and a Royal flypast

In a striking display of reconciliation and unity, the Lord’s Prayer was recited simultaneously in the native languages of all the Allied nations present. German Ambassador Andreas Kindl also offered a prayer for peace, emphasizing themes of love and ultimate sacrifice.

The emotional weight of the ceremony was heightened by a spectacular honorary flypast over the cemetery by the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows and the 30th Squadron, sweeping over the stunning backdrop of Souda Bay.

Following the flypast, Princess Anne led the solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery’s central memorial, followed by political leaders, military officials, and emotional family members of the fallen soldiers.

Before concluding her visit, the Princess Royal took a private, guided tour of the beautifully maintained Commonwealth war graves, pausing at several specific headstones to learn more about the remarkable, individual stories of the heroes who fought and died during the Battle of Crete.
