The Parthenon frieze may have been designed to reveal its story as ancient viewers walked alongside it, creating an experience closer to a cinematic sequence than a static work of art, according to research led by Ellie Mackin Roberts. The study argues that movement, changing sightlines and the rhythm of the Parthenon’s columns shaped how Athenians experienced the 160-meter-long (525 ft) sculpture.
The frieze includes 378 human figures and about 245 animals carved in Pentelic marble. Much of it depicts a ceremonial procession traditionally associated with the Panathenaic festival, one of ancient Athens’ most important religious celebrations in honor of Athena.
The Parthenon was built during the extraordinary cultural flowering of fifth-century B.C. Athens. Yet the location of its elaborate frieze has long puzzled scholars.
The relief stood roughly 12 meters, or 39 feet, above the floor. The temple’s outer columns partly blocked it. Ancient visitors therefore could not stand in one place and see the entire procession. Roberts argues that these restrictions may have been an intentional part of the experience.
Columns turned the frieze into a sequence
Previous studies have shown that every section of the frieze could be seen from certain positions around the temple. Visitors, however, had to walk through the narrow space between the outer columns and the inner structure while looking sharply upward.
The architects of the Parthenon carefully manipulated how viewers perceived the building, using subtle curves and other refinements to create an impression of visual balance.
Roberts builds on earlier research by applying concepts normally used to study moving images. One comparison involves the zoetrope, a 19th-century device in which a sequence of images appears to come alive through movement.
The study does not claim that Greek sculptors invented animation or anticipated cinema. Instead, the comparison offers a way to understand how movement can turn separate visual scenes into a continuous narrative. On the Parthenon, the images remained still while the viewer moved.
As visitors walked, columns repeatedly blocked and revealed parts of the frieze. The spaces between columns effectively created visual “frames.” Rather than seeing the entire sculpture at once, viewers built an understanding of the procession from a succession of glimpses.
Movement changes the pace of the story
The arrangement of the figures appears to support that interpretation. On the western frieze, young men prepare for the procession. Some mount horses or adjust equipment, while others appear ready to depart. The scenes establish a sense of anticipation before the procession gains momentum.
The north and south sides become much more energetic. Groups of horsemen dominate the composition. Horses appear in different positions and stages of movement, while changes in spacing and riders’ poses prevent the procession from becoming visually repetitive.
Standing figures periodically interrupt the cavalry. These breaks divide the procession into smaller visual groups and give viewers time to process what they have just seen.
The pace then changes again. Sacrificial animals, musicians and attendants appear as the procession approaches the eastern side. The figures become less densely packed, and their implied movement slows.
Roberts compares these changes with cinematic pacing. A relatively calm opening develops into a faster action sequence before slowing toward the narrative’s conclusion.
The comparison also helps explain how the frieze represents time. The actual Panathenaic procession may have taken between 90 minutes and two hours. A viewer walking around the Parthenon could experience the sculpted version in only several minutes. The frieze effectively compressed a lengthy public ritual into a much shorter visual sequence.
Ancient color strengthened the visual experience
Ancient visitors also saw something very different from the largely white marble associated with Classical Greek sculpture today.
Scientific research has identified surviving traces of pigments on Parthenon sculptures, including Egyptian blue and evidence of elaborate painted details. The discovery forms part of growing evidence that ancient Greek statues and architectural sculpture were originally brightly colored.
Color would have been particularly important because of the frieze’s position. It stood high above visitors in an area where the colonnade created changing patterns of light and shadow.
Roberts argues that painted clothing, highlighted details and other colors could have made individual figures easier to recognize as viewers moved between the columns. The combination of architecture, color and light therefore helped control what people saw and when they saw it.
Modern reconstructions have similarly sought to show how dramatically different the Parthenon originally appeared, before centuries of damage and the loss of its painted decoration changed the building’s appearance.
The viewing experience was not simply about examining carved details. It involved walking, looking upward, losing sight of scenes and then finding new ones as the next opening between columns appeared.
Procession reaches its climax with Athena
The eastern frieze marks a major change in the narrative. The energy of the cavalry gives way to a calmer gathering of gods and ritual participants.
At its center is the famous cloth scene, commonly connected with the sacred peplos presented to Athena during the Panathenaic festival. Roberts argues that this quieter composition acted as the culmination of the visual journey. Its location may also have connected the sculpture directly with what visitors encountered inside the temple.
Behind the eastern entrance stood the monumental gold-and-ivory statue of Athena Parthenos created by Phidias. The roughly 12-meter-tall statue dominated the Parthenon’s interior.
A visitor looking upward at the peplos scene and then lowering their gaze toward the temple entrance could therefore encounter two related images of Athena’s worship: the ritual involving her sacred garment above and the monumental goddess inside. The study argues that such relationships are difficult to understand when individual frieze blocks are displayed at eye level in museums.
In its original setting, the Parthenon frieze demanded physical participation. Ancient visitors had to move around the building to follow it. The columns that appeared to obstruct the artwork may therefore have served another purpose. They controlled its rhythm, divided the procession into visual sequences, and determined when each scene came into view.
Rather than simply decorating the Parthenon, the frieze may have transformed a visitor’s walk around the temple into part of the story itself.
