Two days after the failed assassination attempt, Trump’s classified documents case was dismissed by a Florida judge on Monday.
This significant step for the dismissal of the infamous case against former US President Donald Trump by US District Judge Aileen Cannon is a truly significant legal victory for the controversial politician and candidate for the November Presidential election in the US.
Judge Cannon – who has to be noted was a Trump appointee – ruled that the appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith was not appropriate and violated the Appointments Clause of the American Constitution. This had as a result, according to the judge’s rationale, the effective nullification of the prosecution against the former President.
This case which became known in 2022, accused Trump of retaining classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate illegally. Additionally, Trump allegedly obstructed FBI efforts to recover these documents to reveal the truth.

This is only one out of a total of four criminal cases that have been issued against Trump. This particular indictment that was dismissed on Monday included a series of felony counts and could potentially land Trump sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
The order of Judge Cannon’s was detailed in a 93-page edition. There, the judge argued that the appointment of Smith by Attorney General Merrick Garland, rather than through congressional confirmation, was improper.
FBI seized dozens of classified documents
Back in August 2022, FBI agents had searched extensively the Mar-a-Lago home of Donald Trump in Florida. The search had been announced in a dramatic statement by Trump himself, who was reportedly alerted by his son, Eric that day.
Republican governors came to Trump’s defense on social media after news of the search emerged, and the entire ordeal had caused political turmoil that lasted for months.
Almost a year later, in June 2023, Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges. More specifically, the attorney who represented Trump entered a plea of not guilty in response to a total of 37 charges.
Decision comes two days after assassination attempt
This significant development in favor of former President Trump and his legal problems came only hours after the shocking assassination attempt that took place on Saturday against him in Pennsylvania. Trump was shot and rushed off the stage after multiple gunshots were heard during a campaign rally that he held in a small town named Butler.
The shooter was later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks who was, shortly after, shot by security service agents. Unfortunately, a man lost his life as a result of the shooting.
