The Washington Oxi Day Foundation has established new global awards to “celebrate everyday acts of courage by unsung heroes across the globe.”

Titled “It Takes Courage,” in partnership with Libra Philanthropies, the awards celebrate everyday acts of courage, seen and unseen, around the world. “Our aim is to inspire, motivate and empower courage in others. This is how we will move the world forward. Together,” the Foundation said.

The new awards build on the Oxi Courage Award that the foundation established in 2011.

The Washington Oxi Day Foundation is a nonprofit, organization dedicated to informing American policymakers and the public about the profound role that Greece played in determining the outcome of the Second World War.

The Foundation celebrates modern-day heroes who exhibit the same courage as the Greeks did in continuing to fight to preserve and promote freedom and democracy around the world.

What are the Oxi Day Foundation’s  Global Courage Awards

“In 2024, we will go from celebrating courage one day a year in one (powerful) city, to spotlighting and spreading courage every day, everywhere.

“Our new global courage awards will be presented in Washington in the fall and around the world in the spring (in a different hemisphere each year),” it continued.

The new awards contain a category for youth, truth and freedom. The youth and the truth awards will be presented in May 2024 in Panama City, while the freedom award will be presented in October in Washington.

The foundation added that the It Takes Courage website and social media platforms will shine a light on everyday acts of courage around the world.

One of the first persons highlighted in It Takes Courage is Christian J. Hadjipateras who has been fighting for face equality after 50 surgeries.

Hadjipateras was born in London in 1984 with craniosynostosis, in which the bones of the skull fuse prematurely. Tests in vitro do not detect this craniofacial anomaly. He also had a bilateral cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism (when the eyes are abnormally far apart), abnormal kidneys, and hearing loss. His hairline and eyebrows were also set unusually high on his face.

With an extremely challenging start in life, Hadjipateras has become a champion for Face Equality. He has been active with support groups for craniofacial anomalies in the US and the UK.

His advocacy primarily focuses on underscoring the psychological challenges associated with facial differences, emphasizing the importance of openness about one’s feelings during the journey through surgeries. It is crucial to navigate these experiences while endeavoring to lead as normal a life as possible.

In every instance, It Takes Courage for individuals to embrace their differences, and Hadjipateras’ journey stands as a testament to the strength found in resilience, reconstruction, and unwavering advocacy.

Through his writing and speaking engagements, he strives to inspire others to embrace their unique stories, fostering a world where courage prevails over adversity.
