A recent report from Deadline suggests Brad Pitt is set to be the lead actor in Quentin Tarantino’s last movie, titled The Movie Critic.

This isn’t the first time Pitt and Tarantino have teamed up. They collaborated in 2019 for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a movie that earned Pitt his first Oscar for best supporting actor.

Pitt also appeared in Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds and played a part in 1993’s True Romance, a movie co-written by Tarantino.

Quentin Tarantino’s supposed final film, set in Los Angeles in 1977, revolves around a movie critic employed by a fictional magazine called “The Popstar Pages.” Tarantino mentioned that the story is inspired by a real person who, although not widely known, wrote film reviews for a porno rag.

This guy was known for being quite impolite—using strong language and racial slurs, yet delivering amusing content, according to Tarantino.

The role of Brad Pitt in the movie is unclear

The specific character Brad Pitt will portray in the film remains uncertain.

During last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Tarantino shared more details, explaining that the character in question wrote reviews for mainstream movies, serving as the secondary critic. Tarantino praised the character, describing him as a highly critical and cynical individual.

He compared the reviews to a mix of early Howard Stern’s style and what Travis Bickle, a character from a famous movie, might sound like if he were a film critic.

Tarantino had previously mentioned the lead role would be someone around thirty-five years old, emphasizing that it would be a fresh and new leading man for his films.

In the past, the writer-director has praised Brad Pitt, referring to him as “one of the last remaining big-screen movie stars.” Their collaboration in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood proved successful, earning $377 million globally, as reported by The Guardian.

Pitt, in his recent roles, took the lead in the action thriller Bullet Train and the showbiz drama Babylon. His upcoming projects include the Apple thriller Wolfs, alongside George Clooney.

Additionally, he is set to star in an untitled F1 movie directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, alongside Javier Bardem and Damson Idris.

Tarantino plans to retire from directing movies

Quentin Tarantino, who is now sixty years old, has consistently expressed his intention to retire from directing movies after making his tenth film.

He believes this approach will help him uphold a consistently high standard in his work. In a 2021 interview on Real Time With Bill Maher, he remarked, “I know film history, and from here on in, directors do not get better.”

If Tarantino sticks to this plan, The Movie Critic would mark his final film, considering he views his Kill Bill saga as a single movie. Post-retirement, Tarantino has mentioned the possibility of directing television and continuing his ventures in book writing.

He ventured into book authorship with a novelization of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in 2021 and a book on film criticism, titled Cinema Speculation, in 2022, as reported by USA Today.
