Many Greek travel guides have been written over the years to help tourists navigate the wonderful country of Greece. However, some areas of the country are way more popular with tourists than others. If you want to experience something different or combine the usual island itinerary with something a little more alternative, “Moon: Best of Greece” is here to help.

Moon’s Best of Greece—The Only Greek Travel Guide You Need

The book is co-authored by Joanna Kalafatis and Sarah Souli and published by Moon Travel Guides. This unique Greek travel guide expands on Souli’s original book, which features itineraries for Athens and the Greek islands.

Joanna Kalafatis, a Greek-American actress and travel writer who has previously been ranked on top travel blogger lists, wrote another book on the Greek mainland that was combined with Souli’s to create the Best of Greece guide.

The chapters on the mainland are organized geographically. Sections include Epirus, Thessaloniki, and the surrounding area, as well as the Peloponnese, Ancient Olympia, and finally, the top tourist destinations of Meteora and Delphi.

Explore the Greek Mainland and UNESCO Sites

Use this Greek travel guide to explore areas of incredible beauty like Zagorohoria,  as well as Vikos Gorge, Mani, Monemvasia, Axios National Park, and much more. Destinations like these are well known to local Greeks but not as familiar to international tourists.

For example, Zagorohoria, a cluster of picturesque traditional mountain villages in northwestern Greece, attracts plenty of Greek tourists. In 2023, UNESCO recognized Zagorohoria as a world heritage site. The book featured sites like these throughout its pages. You may discover ruins, hidden beaches, and hiking trails you never knew existed.

For outdoors lovers, there are also plenty of hiking and adventure recommendations. Discover where to take the best photos of popular spots such as Voidokoilia Beach, or if you’re up for a challenge, how to access Delphi from its nearby port.

Figure out where to stay and what to eat and see on your next trip. In the meantime, you can learn a little more about the culture, history, and cuisine of each place. For food lovers, an entire section of the book that you won’t want to miss is dedicated to Greek cuisine.

Writing the Travel Guide

Moon’s Best of Greece was borne out of three months of almost nonstop travel by Joanna through the mainland, as well as plenty of research and conversations with locals. She obtained recommendations from the people who lived in each area and knew it best.

This particular Greek travel guide focuses on boosting tourism responsibly and sustainably. Over ninety-five percent of the featured hotels and restaurants in the Greek mainland

chapters are locally owned and operated. Joanna made sure to promote properties that would help keep tourist money in local communities.

Join the Author on a Greek Trip

If you’re not sure where to start with the guidebook, you also have the option to join Joanna herself on a weeklong trip through Crete. The group trip takes place June 3rd to June 9th. Joanna will lead the group trip herself and offer free photography workshops as well.

Travel through Crete with Joanna and visit the sites of Heraklion, Rethymno, and Chania. You will explore beautiful beaches, historic ruins, and take jeep safaris through hidden oases. Noted tourism company TrovaTrip will organize the trip.
