Two of Greece’s top bars have earned places on the list of the world’s finest spots, as unveiled by The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023. This recognition comes in the expanded list, which ranges from 51 to 100, and features two exceptional bars located in Athens.
The extended ranking, from 51 to 100, encompasses bars from thirty-four cities worldwide and introduces fourteen newcomers to the list. Notable additions include Nouvelle Vague in Tirana, Albania, securing the 86th spot, and Mirror Bar in Bratislava, Slovakia ranking at 90. The Lost & Found in Nicosia, hailing from Cyprus, maintains its position at 81.
Europe retains its dominance with the highest number of entries, and this year’s list welcomes three cities for the first time: Tulum, Guadalajara, and Tirana. The United States is presented in the ranking with six bars from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The list also boasts fourteen bars from Asia, with five based in Singapore.
Greece’s Bars on the List
Both Greek bars featured on the list are located in the country’s capital of Athens. The first of these, The Bar in Front of the Bar, was founded by cocktail experts Alexandros Tselepis, Konstantinos Theodorakopoulos, and Simeon Papanikolaou.
The list noted the eccentric concept with humor in its appealing style. It also emphasized the design features large sans-serif text messages that are updated frequently, with witty phrases such as “Something to talk to your therapist about.” The bar, ranked 98th, offers a daily rotating selection of drinks while prioritizing a zero-waste approach.

Athenian Bar Loved by Frank Sinatra
Athens is home to many outstanding places that have always attracted famous people. Among these is the Au Revoir bar. Nestled in the heart of Athens, this historic place dates back to the mid-20th century and is even graced by the presence of the legendary Frank Sinatra.
Founded by the Papatheodorou brothers in 1958 in Kypseli, this bar has etched its own chapter into the vibrant nightlife of Athens. The bar thrived during a bygone era when Kypseli and downtown Athens represented the city’s most vibrant and beautiful quarters.
It was a time when the city center significantly differed from its current appearance, marked by the grandest economic boom in post-war Greece. This was during an age of new buildings, flourishing shops, cafes, and cinemas, luminous streets, and bustling corners where the young and old basked in the city’s exuberance.
