On Monday, the government in Greece extended the tenure of General Konstantinos Floros as chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA).

Floros, who first assumed office in January 2020, will serve for another year.

The Greek general born in Chalkida on June 24, 1961 rose through the ranks of the Hellenic armed forces after serving as a staff officer in the Special Forces Directorate of the Hellenic Army General Staff in 2003 to 2004. He was appointed commander of the elite VII Amphibious Raider Squadron.

Promoted to brigadier general, he assumed command of the 13th Special Operations Command in 2012 before moving to the Army General Staff as head of the Operations Directorate in March 2014.

In January 2017, the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence (KYSEA) appointed him chief of staff of GEETHA, but in March of the same year, he was promoted to deputy chief and the rank of lieutenant general.

In July 2022, he received the Medal of the United States Special Operations Command from General Richard D. Clarke, Commander of the Special Operations Forces of the United States of America.

On January 17, 2020, KYSEA selected him as Chief of GEETHA in succession to Christodoulou, promoting him to full general.

General Floros allegedly spied on by Greek intelligence service

A report on Greece’s wiretapping scandal alleged that General Floros has been under surveillance by the Greek intelligence service (EYP).

The paper Documento said that the code name used for the surveillance of his phone by the Predator spyware was 519c.

There has not been any official reaction to the report by the General Staff or the Greek government.

On Monday, KYSEA, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, also appointed Lieutenant General Angelos Houdeloudis as chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS), while Vice Admiral Ioannis Drymousis was appointed chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (HNGS).
