Greece’s Main Opposition Leader Alexis Tsipras is COVID-19 Positive

Chief of Greece’s main opposition SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras, tested positive for COVID-19, after a preventive molecular test on Saturday.

The news was made known by Tsipras himself through his post on Twitter. He clarified that he has mild symptoms and expressed his hope to be healthy soon.

Tsipras also said that his partner, Betty, and their two children tested negative.

The opposition leader and former prime minister and his party have repeatedly condemned the government for failing to take the right measures against COVID-19, blaming them for the pandemic fatalities.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wished Alexis Tsipras to get well soon via Twitter.

He also expressed his certainty that his opponent in parliament will be fine since he had the third dose of the vaccine.

Minister of Development and Investment, Adonis Georgiadis, also wished Tsipras to get well soon via Twitter as well.

The new president of PASOK-Movement for Change, Nikos Androulakis, also expressed his wishes to Tsipras for a quick recovery.

Greece announces 18,592 COVID-19 cases, 66 deaths

The National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced 18,592 new cases of coronavirus in the country on Sunday.

At the same time, 66 died of complications of the disease. The number of intubated patients reached 642, compared to 634 announced on Saturday.

Among intubated patients, 545 (84.89 percent) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 97 (15.11 percent) are fully vaccinated.

The admission of new Covid-19 patients to the hospitals of the territory is 632 (daily change + 21.07 percent).

The new laboratory-confirmed cases of the disease recorded in the last 24 hours are 18,592, of which 97 were identified after checks at the country’s entry points.

The total number of cases amounts to 1,507,616 (daily change + 1.2 percent), of which 50.0 percent are men.

Based on the confirmed cases of the last seven days, 588 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 1,767 are related to an already known case.

The number of new deaths of patients with COVID-19 are 66, while since the beginning of the pandemic a total of 21,394 deaths have been recorded with 95.1 percent of them having suffered from an underlying disease and / or are of age 70 and older.

The number of patients treated by intubation is 642 (58.4 percent men). Their median age is 64 years, with 80.5 percent of them having an underlying disease and / or are of age 70 and older.

Among patients in intubation, 545 (84.89 percent) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 97 (15.11 percent) are fully vaccinated. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,822 patients have been discharged from ICU.

The admissions of new COVID-19 patients to the hospitals of the territory are 632 (daily change + 21.07 percent). The average seven-day admission is 556 patients.

The median age of cases is 36 years (range 0.2 to 106 years), while the median age of death is 78 years (range 0.2 to 106 years).
