An alleged electricity emergency cost an 88-year-old woman in Thessaloniki a fortune in gold coins and jewelry. She told police that callers used a false warning about electrocution to trick her into moving her valuables. Accomplices then entered her apartment and stole them.
The reported haul included 4,766 British gold sovereigns and jewelry. Its estimated value exceeded €4.76 million (approximately $5.5 million), according to reports citing her complaint.
How the Scam Worked
The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday, October 13, in central Thessaloniki. An unknown caller allegedly claimed to represent the municipality and warned the woman about upcoming electrical work in the area.
The caller said the work could pose an electrocution risk. The woman was instructed to gather her gold coins, jewelry and other metal objects. She was then told to move them to another part of her home and remain in a separate room.
According to the complaint, the caller also told her to leave her apartment door open. Accomplices allegedly entered and took bags containing the valuables before fleeing.
The gold coins accounted for most of the reported loss. The jewelry was valued at around €10,000 (approximately $11,600).
Police Investigate the Theft
The local Police department in Thessaloniki is investigating the case. No suspects have been identified at the time of publication.
The incident highlights how scammers use fear and false claims of official authority to gain access to victims’ homes. An unexpected call about electrical work should never be enough to justify moving valuables or letting strangers inside.
Authorities warn that anyone receiving such a call should hang up and contact the relevant utility or public authority using an independently verified phone number.
