A new coronavirus record was set in Greece on Tuesday, with the country’s health authorities announcing 50,126 new cases across the country. The number is 13,880 cases more than the 36,246 cases recorded on Monday.
This is the highest number of cases ever recorded in the country in a 24-hour period since the start of the pandemic.
The previous record for the highest number of coronavirus cases recorded in one day in Greece had been broken last Friday, when 40,560 cases of the virus were identified in the country.
Last Thursday, Greece had recorded another staggering total of 35,580 cases of Covid-19, an increase of 6,752 over the 28,828 that was recorded last Wednesday.
Just 52 of Tuesday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.
Currently, there are 619 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, four more than the 615 who were undergoing the invasive treatment on Monday.
Schools to reopen in Greece on Monday despite Coronavirus surge
Schools are set to reopen in Greece on Monday after the holidays despite the recent surge in coronavirus cases in the country.
Instead of taking two self tests each week, as is already required for the unvaccinated, students and teachers will have to take three, regardless of vaccination status, for the first week of school.
After the first week, all students and teachers will take two self tests each week.
If a student or teacher is positive for the virus, all unvaccinated students and teachers in the class will have to take a daily test, two rapid tests and three self tests, for five days.
Vaccinated students and teachers will have to take one extra self test that week, making a total of three tests that week for them.
Price of PCR tests capped at 47 euros
The Greek government announced a price cap of 47 euros for PCR coronavirus tests at private clinics and laboratories in the country. The new price limit will be in effect starting on Thursday.
Before, the price limit on the tests had been capped at 60 euros.
According to the Greek government’s official announcement, the price breakdown equals to a 35 euros for the analysis of the samples, and 12 euros for the collection of the samples for testing.
Free PCR tests are available at public hospitals in Greece for those who have come in contact with a confirmed case of the virus or have symptoms themselves.
Over one million Coronavirus cases recorded in Greece
A total of 61 people across Greece died with the coronavirus on Tuesday, 17 fewer than the 78 people who succumbed with the virus on Monday. This brings the total number of deaths associated with the virus to 21,053 as of Tuesday.
95.1% of the people who succumbed with the virus had underlying disease and/or were age 70 years and older.
Based on the confirmed cases of the last seven days, 264 are considered to be related to travel from abroad and 1,203 are related to an already known case.
Among intubated patients, 525 (84.81%) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 94 (15.19%) are fully vaccinated. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,780 patients have been discharged from the ICU across the country.
The number of admissions of new Covid-19 patients to Greek hospitals was 452. The average number of daily admissions for coronavirus in Greece over the past week is 429.
The total number of coronavirus cases recorded in Greece is 1,344,923, showing a daily increase of 3.9%, of which 50.2% are men.
The median age of all this suffering with the virus is 36 years, while the median age of death is 78 years.
