Elon Musk said Monday, October 19, that he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States in 2027, although he has not provided details about how the distribution would work.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote on X, adding that further giveaways would follow.
The announcement suggests the shares would come from Musk’s personal holdings rather than newly issued company stock.
Distribution of SpaceX Shares Details Remain Unclear
Musk has not specified who would qualify for the giveaway, whether it would include only US citizens or all children living in the country, or how shares would be transferred.
He also has not announced a distribution date or explained how families would claim the shares.
According to CNN, giving one share to approximately 73 million children would represent an estimated $10.7 billion, based on SpaceX’s October 16 share price of around $146.
The actual value would depend on the number of eligible recipients and the share price at the time of distribution. SpaceX began trading publicly in June 2026.
Announcement Follows Anthropic Proposal
Musk’s statement followed an October 18 announcement by artificial intelligence company Anthropic that it planned to allocate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval.
The proposed fund would support nonprofit organizations and potentially provide direct financial assistance to selected populations. Responding to Anthropic’s proposal on X, Musk called for shares to be distributed directly to the public before announcing his own plan.
Anthropic said its fund could address economic disruption linked to artificial intelligence. Its proposal also allows for additional share allocations as the company’s valuation increases.
