The trial of Pantelis Zelios, a local Cretan man who has been accused of the grisly murder of an American scientist in the summer of 2019 will begin on Tuesday.
The Cretan city of Rethymno will be the location of the legal proceedings against the 28-year-old, who admitted to the killing last year in court, and apologized to the family of the renowned researcher, who worked for Germany’s Max-Planck Institute in Dresden.
Dr. Suzanne Eaton, 60, was purposefully hit by a car, then abducted and taken to an old WWII-era bunker on the island, before being raped and murdered after going for a jog on July 2, 2019.
Her body was found in the bunker, which Zelios had used before as a hideaway, even showing the bunker in one of his own videos on social media which clearly showed bones leaning against its walls.
The American researcher had been taking part in a conference at the Orthodox Academy in Chania.
