March 30 Coronavirus Latest Updates: Trump Says US Deaths Could Reach 100,000

As the novel coronavirus has infected more than 723,000 people worldwide and killed over 33,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, President Trump conceded on Sunday that in a worst-case scenario, deaths in the United States from the coronavirus could reach 100,000 or more.
Six more people who had been hospitalized with coronavirus in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Alexandroupolis died on Sunday, bringing the total number of fatalities in Greece to 38. The total number of confirmed cases in the country is 1,156.
Updates on Monday
21:45: Scenes of hundreds of people walking around Thessaloniki’s seafront on Monday made the Mayor of the city Constantinos Zervas threaten that he might shut the ”Nea Paralia” promenade down.
19:35: Italy records 832 new deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic. The total death toll is now 11,591 people.
19:02: The Greek government has said that from 565 intensive care units before the crisis, the country’s National Health System has now more than 870. Additionally, funds to hire 4,200 medical personnel have now been approved.

18:52:  The American company Johnson & Johnson has said that it is due to start human testing of a new coronavirus vaccine in September 2020.
18:02: Greece records 52 new coronavirus cases. The total number of cases in the country is now 1,212. Seventy-two people are currently hospitalized in serious condition.
17:50: The coronavirus death toll in Greece has now risen to 43.
17:30: The 894-foot long ship USNS Comfort, which has beds for 1,000 patients, arrives in New York Harbor to care for patients in the NYC area who do not have the coronavirus. The other US Navy ship devoted to medical relief is currently headed to San Diego, California, where it will dock shortly.

16:35: Greece’s Onassis Foundation has announced that it will donate 13.5 million surgical masks to the Greek National Health Service.
16:00: “Clarence House has confirmed today that, having consulted with his doctor, the Prince of Wales is now out of self-isolation,” was the most recent announcement in regard to the health of Prince Charles, who had earlier been diagnosed with the coronavirus and had self-quarantined in Scotland.
13:35: Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called on all government ministers and New Democracy lawmakers to contribute 50 percent of their wages for the next two months to a special fund in the battle against coronavirus.


13:10: Spain has logged a slight decrease in the number of people dying from the coronavirus after days of record death tolls. According to the latest figures, 812 people died from the virus between Sunday and Monday.
The virus has so far claimed 7,340 lives in Spain, and the country has now confirmed a total of 85,195 cases, up from 78,797 yesterday.
12:50: An Aegean Airlines flight arrived at Athens International Airport early on Monday with 1.7 million surgical masks and other materials from China to help the efforts of the Greek state in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. Full story
09:40: Germany’s public health agency reports that 57,298 people are currently infected around the country – up 4,751 from yesterday. The southern state of Bavaria, where the disease first appeared in Germany, has the highest number of cases.
The national death toll in Germany stands at 455, a rise of 66 from Sunday.
09:30: A ban on visitors to the monastic community of Mount Athos in northern Greece, which was introduced on March 19 as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus, has been extended through April 11.
09:15: Italy has said it will extend its month-long lockdown as the number of deaths in the country increased by 756 to reach 10,779. There are now 97,689 confirmed cases in Italy. The death toll in the country’s worst affected region, Lombardy, has slowed, however.
08:30: China has reported a drop in new virus cases for a fourth day in a row, according to figures released by the government. There were 31 new cases reported on Monday – of which it says 30 were imported. This is down from 45 the previous day, said the National Health Commission.
08:00: President Donald Trump acknowledged Sunday for the first time that deaths in the United States from coronavirus could possibly reach 100,000 or more, adding that if the death toll stays at or below 100,000 in the country with a population of approximately 330,000,000, “we all together have done a very good job.” Full story
