Leaders from around the world have been sending congratulatory letters and messages to the new President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, over the last few days.
In his letter to President Sakellaropoulou, US President Donald Trump said ”Relations between Greece and the United States have never been better. I have every hope that they will continue to grow in every aspect, from our excellent cooperation in defense, security and energy, to our strong economic ties and the bonds between our peoples.”
Trump’s letter also noted that ”The United States is looking forward to celebrating with the people of Greece the 200th anniversary of the independence of the Hellenic Republic.”
On his behalf, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he looks forward to participating in the country’s events to mark the 200 years of the War of Independence War, adding that ”Greece is at the heart of the French people, who, throughout its history, have always been on the side of the Greek people, admiring their invaluable contribution to our culture.”
Similar letters were sent to President Sakellaropoulou by her colleague Frank-Walter Steinmeier from Germany and China’s Xi Jinping.
On her behalf, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom congratulated Sakellaropoulou and added that “The UK looks forward to celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution next year.”
