Media across the globe have been constantly informing the public about the Covid-19 Coronavirus outbreak in the last several weeks, and its rapid spread is indeed troubling. However, the outbreak of influenza which occurs every winter is proving yet again that the “regular flu” is a deadly virus as well, claiming the lives of dozens.
Seventeen people died in Greece just this week from the annual outbreak of influenza, raising the total number of fatalities this flu season to 77.
These figures were announced by Greece’s National Public Health Organization (EODY) on Thursday.
The EODY noted in its weekly epidemiological report that 59 of those who succumbed to influenza had been hospitalized in intensive care units.
A total of 44 men and 33 women have died in the country so far from the common wintertime flu outbreak.
Up until now, Greece has recorded 227 serious influenza cases, with 206 victims needing to be hospitalized in intensive care units.
“We remain in a period of increased flu activity in Greece,” EODY noted, urging the Greek populace to follow common sanitary practices in their everyday activities.
