The “Global Earthquake Model”, a new online resource created by the Global Science Forum of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was released last week.
Its digital, interactive online maps depict all currently-known global seismic hazards. The project’s aim is to decrease the devastation and human suffering caused by earthquakes worldwide.
The Forum’s model shows that the regions with the highest risk for earthquakes in Greece are Attica (Athens), followed by the Peloponnesian peninsula, the Ionian islands and western Greece.
The interactive earthquake model will be updated once a year tremors that have been recorded in every country in the world, in hopes that to show the areas that are most vulnerable to quakes.
The Forum, a public/private partnership, used information collected from academic institutions and governments, as well as some private companies, in the creation of this unique interactive model.
Officials and authorities, along with emergency services and natural-disaster experts, can now use this invaluable online resource to prepare for possible earthquakes and the damage and devastation which usually follow.
