The Abundance of Goats in Greece and the Therapeutic Qualities of Goat Milk

Greece comes first in Europe in the number of grazing goats, as approximately 4.5 million goats are bred in the country, amounting to 47.6 percent of milk-producing goats in the EU.
Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Zootechnics of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Georgios Arsenos says that goat milk has great medicinal qualities because of its high digestibility and hypoallergenicity, and a significant number of scientists recommend it for people who are allergic to cow milk. Research results show that 40 – 100 percent of people who are allergic to cows milk can consume goat milk without any problems.
In particular, Arsenos explains, babies with gastrointestinal problems caused by cow milk were cured after drinking goat milk for a certain period of time. A large number of researchers worldwide focus on the beneficial qualities of goat milk and at the same time the Greek economy can benefit greatly from mass production of goat milk.
“This is a challenge for all those involved in the production and processing of goat milk in the country. The first steps were taken with the introduction of pasteurized goat milk and other dairy products exclusively from goats milk in the wider market,” Arsenos says.
“The future requires sustainable livestock for high quality milk production and the incorporation of innovations at all stages of production and processing such as production of goat milk powder to make Greece the number one provider of goat milk in Europe,” the professor adds.
