New Democracy Leader Raises Jailed Greek Soldiers’ Case with Israeli PM

The leader of Greece’s largest opposition party, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, met Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, raising the issue of the two Greek soldiers who have been in Turkish custody for over 100 days.

Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party said the two men discussed trade, tourism and energy ties between Greece and Israeli but also the construction of the EastMed pipeline project.

Mitsotakis has been on a visit to Israel for several days, and Monday’s visit took place amid media reports from the country claiming an Arab-Israeli couple had been questioned and checked by Israeli security officials operating at a Greek airport last month.

A story in Israel’s Haaretz newspaper included in an interview with a journalist called Sahar Issawi who said she and her husband were asked to produce their marriage license before boarding an Israir flight from Heraklion to Israel on May 10.

The couple also had to remove items of clothing during a search and were questioned separately. Another Arab couple waiting on the flight was also questioned, according to the Haaretz report.
