Byzantine Church on Greek Island Wins European Heritage Award

The Byzantine church of Hagia Kyriaki on Naxos is one of the winners of the 2018 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards, an honor in the heritage field.
The 8th century church was chosen for its unique frescoes that were reconstructed by a joint Greek and Swiss team.
This restoration meant Greece was one of the outstanding European heritage success stories in the awards’ Conservation category for 2018.
Greece was also recognized in the same category for its collaboration with Egypt and Italy in conserving the Apse Mosaic of the Transfiguration in the Basilica at St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai, Egypt.
The European heritage network recognized 29 laureates from 17 countries for their impressive accomplishments in conservation, research, dedicated service, education, training and awareness raising.
Winners will be honored at a high-profile ceremony on June 22 in Berlin, during the first-ever European Cultural Heritage Summit.
