Gilles Marini Speaks Out on Sexual Harassment in Hollywood

The #MeToo campaign that emerged after the expose of Harvey Weinstein’s multiple instances of sexual harassment and assault has brought a lot of celebrities forward with their stories of harassment in the industry; one of the more recent stars to speak out publicly is Greek-French actor Gilles Marini.

Marini, who became famous after a role as Samantha’s (Kim Cattrall’s) sexy neighbor in the “Sex and the City” movie, and followed up his role with appearances in numerous films and TV shows, tweeted “Finally we see a huge movement from all women against sexual abuse; in young boy and men it’s really hard to open up. I hope for a change.” The actor has spoken up about how he himself felt like a “piece of meat” to many Hollywood executives after he saw his profile rise in the media.

Referring to the fact that though many women have come forward, few men have opened up about sexual harassment and abuse they have experienced, Marini went on to tell “People” magazine, “I didn’t see many men use the hashtag #MeToo. And the reason is because it’s a stigma, it’s a shame, you lose your manhood. When a young man is affected by being raped, or sexually harassed, or touched … you will never hear [about it] — but those people exist.”

It is true that though more women are generally affected by sexual harassment, men have a harder time speaking out about their abuse because of societal factors and gender roles.

As for his opinion on Weinstein, Marini was very clear and unforgiving: “This man doesn’t need to go to a sexual addiction [treatment] … that is a joke to me. When you violate someone, the only place you need to go is jail.”
