Greek Parties React to Referendum Results in Turkey

Greece’s political parties reacted with cautious remarks to the results of Sunday’s referendum in Turkey that give more powers to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Maximos Mansion in an unofficial statement said that “the decision of the Turkish people will be respected” and that “Greece always supports stability and democracy in the neighboring country.”
SYRIZA MEP and Deputy Speaker of the European Parliament Dimitris Papadimoulis said that the referendum results show a “deeply divided Turkey” and said that Erdogan managed a “marginal and controversial victory.”
Giorgos Koumoutsakos of New Democracy called on the Turkish political leadership and the Turkish people to show prudence and stressed that Greece looks forward to friendly relations and cooperation with the neighboring country, despite the deep Constitutional change of Turkey.
On behalf of the Democratic Coalition, Andreas Loverdos spoke of a “Caesarean regime” and expressed his concern over Euro-Turkish relations as well as wider repercussions in the South-East Mediterranean region.
To Potami issued an official statement calling on the Turkish president to “use his new powers for the benefit of peace and stability” and “not to drift into more authoritarian forms of government.”
