Greece placed more golden hour destinations in a global top 20 than any other country, with four locations recognized for their sunset conditions. The ranking by travel company Kuoni, developed with British Weather Services, assessed 165 places using cloud cover, light pollution, and other weather factors.
The country’s strongest showing came from Lindos Acropolis on Rhodes, which ranked 10th worldwide with a score of 87.97 out of 100. Rhodes Town followed at No. 17 with 85.58, while the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion placed 19th with 85.47. Navagio Shipwreck Beach on Zante completed Greece’s four entries at No. 20, scoring 84.79.
Kuoni identified Greece as Europe’s leading country for sunset viewing. Lindos Acropolis, located 116 meters (381 feet) above the sea, recorded average cloud cover of 27.1%. Its golden-hour period lasted 31.9 minutes, among the longest in the study, giving visitors an extended window for evening light.

Four golden hour destinations put Greece ahead in Europe
Outside Greece, Cyprus was Europe’s only other representative in the global top 20. Paphos City Centre ranked 16th at 86.23. The report also highlighted Victoria on Malta’s island of Gozo as another Mediterranean location worth considering, although it did not reach the global top 20.
The overall destination winner was Wadi Rum in Jordan, which led the international list with 95.92 points. Namibia claimed second and third places through Sossusvlei and Damaraland, scoring 94.93 and 91.83, respectively. Its Etosha National Park finished sixth, giving the African country three entries in the top six.
Desert landscapes performed especially well. Chile’s Atacama Desert ranked fourth, followed by Oman’s Wahiba Sands in fifth. Botswana’s Okavango Delta finished seventh, while California’s San Joaquin Valley and Australia’s Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park shared eighth place.
The ranking considered destinations across several regions, rather than comparing Mediterranean coastal views alone.
Cloud cover carries the most weight in sunset rankings
The researchers assigned the greatest weight to cloud cover, at 35% of the score. Light pollution accounted for 20%, while rainfall and artificial brightness each contributed 15%.
Wind speed made up 8% and average sunset duration the remaining 7%. Kuoni said the figures drew on five-year historical weather averages and should not be read as a forecast for any particular evening.
Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, said clear sightlines and limited artificial light were important for striking views. Kuoni executive Marco Rocha also cautioned against choosing only famous locations.
“What’s interesting is that the best golden hour locations aren’t always the most obvious ones,” he said.
