Basic Food Items Remain Expensive in Greece Despite Recession

supermarketGreece is the second most expensive country in the European Union in dairy products and eggs, while other basic food items are above the average EU prices.
Eurostat, the European Union statistical authority, released the 2015 figures on Wednesday, and data show that even after six years of recession and slashed wages and pensions, food prices remain high. Higher than recession-hit countries such as Spain and Portugal, even higher than “rich” countries such as Germany and the Netherlands.
For example, the prices of foods and alcoholic beverages in Greece are 3% higher than the EU average. Milk and eggs are more expensive by 31% of the European Community average, making Greece the second most expensive country after Cyprus among the “28” in this product category.
Greece is 17% more expensive than the EU average and sixth most expensive among the 28 member states in the category of alcoholic beverages, due for the most part to over-taxation on these products.
Food staples such as bread and cereals are 14% more expensive in Greece than the EU average and sixth most expensive in this category among the “28.” Fish prices are also 13% more expensive than the EU average, while oils and fats are 16% higher.
However, prices in meats are 12% lower than the EU average, while fruits and vegetables are 17% less expensive.
