New Greek IDs Could Soon Come With Microchips

ΙΔCurrent Greek identification cards could soon be replaced by newer more modern ones that include a microchip, the Huffington Post reports.
The new IDs could be like those that are in effect in the other countries of the European Union. Each of these cards has a microchip that contains a unique identification number.
Although Greece is already behind the EU on this front, fears of jihadists traveling to Europe and the USA with forged papers has brought Greece under renewed pressure.
The United States is particularly interested in this matter. United States Secretary of State John Kerry pressed Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on the adoption of these cards during his recent visit to Greece, according to the Huffington Post.
American desire for this reform stems from the report that 300 people tried to enter the United States with counterfeit Greek passports, Huffington Post reports. This ties in with the IDs, as US officials reportedly believe that the passports could have been made with counterfeit Greek ID cards.
An anonymous official from the Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection is quoted as saying that this issue has concerned Americans for a long time and added that while there has not been a committee formed to look into the new IDs, this could happen soon.
