Greek PM Meets with Presidents; Raul Castro, Rousseff and Correa in New York

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with a number of national leaders on Monday, during his participation in the United Nations General Assembly’s annual General Debate that is taking place in New York.
He met with Cuban President Raul Castro who invited Tsipras to Cuba and informed the Greek premier that he is closely following developments in Greece, a press release from the Greek Prime Minister’s office noted. Castro had been among the world leaders who publicly congratulated Tsipras for the outcome of the July 5 referendum in Greece.
Following his conversation with Castro, Tsipras also met with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. The Greek Premier was accompanied by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and Greek Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis in his meeting with Rousseff.
The two premiers deliberated on economic cooperation between their respective countries, particularly in the agricultural sector, the aerospace industry and the energy industry, according to the Greek Prime Minister’s office.
“The creation of an expert committee was decided in order for cooperation in these sectors to be further promoted,” the press release notes. “The cultural cooperation between the two nations ahead of the Rio Olympic Games was also discussed. Alexis Tsipras invited Dilma Rousseff to visit Athens in February to receive the Olympic flame.”
korea_3Later in the day, Tsipras sat down with Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa.
“They discussed the issue of Debt and the importance of its reconstruction for economic growth. The relationship between Latin America and the European Union, as well as the role of Greece as a bridge between the two regions,” the Greek Prime Minister’s office noted.
Tsipras’s contacts were not limited to face-to-face meetings as he had a phone conversation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Secretary General, Angel Gurria. The OECD leader offered his support to Greece as well as his assistance in case the Greek government needs help promoting the reforms that will ensure public meritocracy, according to another press released by the Greek Prime Minister’s office media.
Tsipras will meet the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping later in the afternoon, before attending a dinner hosted by United States President Barack Obama.
