Strong Earthquake Near Greek Island of Kos

earthquak-KosStrong seismic activity occurred over the last hours in Greece. Four major earthquakes measuring above 4 on the Richter scale occurred today, July 24, reaching a peak with a tremor near the coast of Kos, measuring 5 on the Richter scale, which took place around 1 pm.
The last earthquake’s epicenter was recorded in the sea west of the Greek island. So far there have been no reports of damages.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center its focal depth was estimated at 10 km.
Three more earthquakes occurred near the island of Samothrace. The first two, measuring 4.3 and 4.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 4:26 and 5:39 respectively. The first earthquakes focal depth was estimated at 45 km and the second’s at 58 km. The third earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale occurred at 9:54 am.
According to scientists a double earthquake is not an unprecedented incident for the region, but the phenomenon cannot go unnoticed, because it concerns the Anatolia rift, which has caused several large-scale earthquakes in the past.
A small-scale earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale also occurred in Attica, Greece at 12:03pm. Its epicenter was located at sea 29 kilometers east of Athens and 4 km southeast of Nea Makri. The tremor was felt by people in the Greek capital since its focal depth was estimated at only 5 km.
