Greek PM Tsipras to Call Elections if SYRIZA MPs Do Not Back Bailout Legislation

The new Greek SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government that was formed on Friday could be short lived.
According to an article in Sunday’s Realnews, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has told close aides that he is planning to call general elections if SYRIZA MPs do not support future bailout legislation that will be up for vote in the Greek parliament.
While Tsipras’s main concern is finalizing the bailout deal with Greece’s international creditors, having a supportive administration is also important for the prime minister. Tsipras refuses to rely on the votes of opposition parties such as New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami to pass future legislation in the parliament.
The prime minister is considering to hold elections in the fall. However, if international creditors oppose this timeline, Tsipras could instead send Greeks to the polls in June 2016.
The article also alleges that Tsipras would not keep his post under a national unity government that could include New Democracy, PASOK and To Potami, in the event that such a government would be necessary to implement the bailout program.
