Greek Easter Mayoral Event in Oakleigh

greekeasterOakleigh is a Melbourne suburb in the municipality of Monash with a large Greek-Australian population. Thousands of Greek migrants live in the area and most of them arrived in the country recently. The suburb’s mayor is also Greek while the only parliament seat is occupied by Greek-Australian Labor MP Steve Dimopoulos.

Therefore, the mayor of Monash decided to organize a Greek Easter feast with music, dance, lamb and all the traditional Greek Easter dishes in order to welcome the newcomers to Australia. The celebration will take place in the most “Greek” neighborhood of Melbourne, the Eaton Mall pedestrian street in Oakleigh, where thousands of people are expected to attend, bringing together newcomers as well as second and third generation Greek community members.

There are many young people who have returned to Australia from Greece, young men and women, even families, who feel isolated, said the mayor, explaining his decision to organize the Easter celebration and invite the Greek Diaspora.

The event will also be attended by official guests, such as Greek Ambassador Haris Dafaranos, Victorian MP Steve Dimopoulos and federal MPs Anna Burke and Claire O ‘Neal. The Greek Easter Mayoral Event will take place from 12pm to 4pm on Easter Day and has been set up to the standards of similar social events taking place in many Greek cities, while everything suggests it will become the community’s new tradition.
