Greek Junior Women's Water Polo Team Wins European Championships

Greek team poloGreece’s national junior women’s water polo team won the gold medal on Sunday in the European Championships held in Ostia, Italy.
The Greek team, coached by Giorgos Morfesis and Stefanos Leandros, beat Italy 7-6 in the FINA Women’s U19 European Championships final and were crowned European champions. Eleftheria Plevritou was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and Chryssi Diamantopoulou was named best goalkeeper.

While Greece was leading the game for the most part, Italy put up a fierce defense. With a two-point lead in the third quarter though, Greece managed to win the gold medal. Spain came in third, after defeating Hungary 7-6, while Russia took fifth place, beating the Netherlands 11-10 after a penalty shootout. Britain came eighth, defeating Ukraine 8-7.
